Steering Wheel Shake/Vibration

Ok... so I've gotten an alignment 2 times in the past month the 2nd time was because I was having shaking between 50-70, I got the alignment done a second time less than a week ago and now on my way to work the steering wheel is shaking a lot, between 50-70, faster I go the more the shaking. Any ideas? If you have questions or I didn't explain fully dont be afraid to tell me

Thanks

It could be the wheels out of balance and nothing to do with the alignment.

I had the same issue. It is the ballance, I promise. When I bought new wheels and tires I had all four "load ballanced". This is when I noticed the issue. It was done twice with load ballancing and I finally took it to a recommended tire shop where they had a plane jane wheel ballancer. After that the issue was resolved. It matters when the person knows what they're doing.

The shop that had the "load ballancer" mentioned that they had just got it. So the tech probably didn't have good knowledge of how to use it properly.

One of your tires could even be out of round. If they'll let you, I'd try to watch them balance the tires.

yeah your tires may have developed flatspots from being parked too long (months) or a hard braking.

Strangely, I have the same problem after prep and a 1,000 miles. It seems to come and go however in the 65-75 MPH range. As if temp or something else has something to do with the balance.

Car's going back to the dealer as soon as the weather breaks to get it rebalanced. I think places have trouble with these Euro-style rims?

If you have new aftermarket rims, it could be the factory retaining clips on the lugs that are keeping the wheel from seating properly on the rotor. Each rotor will have a clip on two of the lugs that were put there at the factory to keep the rotor in place as it moved down the line. The oem wheels have an opening in the wheel that clears these clips.

If this is the case, just remove them with a pair of plyers as they are not needed anymore.

Check out this thread that I posted in a while back about it.

some times the tire needs to be spun on the rim and then rebalenced. That is some times if they are having to put and bunch of weights in one spot.

I had the same problem with with my factory rims. I took the clips off, and the problem was gone.

Cars have different resonance points with the engine rpm. The same is for tires, and 60 mph is usually a point that you "feel" the vibration more than at other times.

Two simple solutions:

1. Lug Nut torque
2. Tire pressure

Make sure they're up to spec

Make sure the tires are not already cupped. If so, they won't heal, they will only get worse. Less noticable if you put them on the rear, but they still won't heal.

Seems like a lot of people (including me) have this problem, right from new. I think the retainer is a good place to look, and makes sense to me. I'm going to remove mine and see what's up.

Could also be the added weight from locking wheel nuts. I've got them. Is this something else people with ballancing problems from the factory have? The locks are installed at the dealer, not factory.

The locks wont make a difference. My bets on a crappy factory balance.

Stupid question probably, but does it vibrate for just a few miles or all the time? It's my experience these soft BFG performance tires (I have the 18" fanblades) flat-spot a little from sitting even overnight. But it goes away after a few miles. And I notice it more when it's cold.

What you are experiencing is "normal", as tires do flat-spot from sitting. However, I've never personally experienced flat-spotting overnight. The worse I've had was a set that flat-spotted after a few days to a week.

Do I need to remove the wheels in order to see these elusive temporary clamps?
