Starting in 2nd gear with TR-3650

Does anyone know if starting in 2nd gear with the TR-3650 will tend to wear out the clutch faster? I thought the whole point of parking the car in 1st gear is so that the car is more difficult to move. If one starts off in 2nd gear, then wouldn't the clutch have to be slipped less to get the vehicle moving?

yes starting in a higher gear will wear out the clutch faster. you'd have to rev it higher to get the torque needed to get the car to move as opposed to 1st gear.

I have never seen anyone so worried about clutch wear

Im a new driver(first time on a 5spd, drove auto before) so I understand.

So I guess my clutch must be near shot with all the worrying I do

Here is a tip. If you are that concerned about clutch life, just drive the car as smoothly as possible.

But in reality, I would say just enjoy the car.

About starting in second, the clutch will wear faster.

On a mostly stock car, yes I would start in first gear. Starting in 2nd is easy with the right mods.....

Im guessing supercharger with 4.10's would be the right mods .

You have it backwards. 1st gear has more leverage for the engine, less leverage for the car when trying to roll it in 1st. As you go up thru the gears, the engine has less leverage, and the car has more against the engine. Reverse has more leverage than 1st. So park it in reverse if you want more security against a emergency brake cable failure while parked.

RadBOSS: 1st and Reverse both have the same ratio. Does that make a difference?

FYI. Gear Ratios:

1st: 3.37
2nd: 1.99
3rd: 1.33
4th: 1.00
5th: 0.68
Rev: 3.22

FYI:

2007 TR-3650 gear ratios.
Source: Advantage 2.9x and 3.x PRP

1st: 3.38
2nd: 2.00
3rd: 1.32
4th: 1.00
5th: 0.62

Rev: 3.38

I even double checked with other TR-3650 gear ratios and these look correct. The 3650 has been used since 2001 in various cars: BA Falcon, 01-04 Mustang GT, MG Rover, and the S197 GT. The biggest changes are in the 5th gear ratios. Some of the variants are numerically higher.

Stop worrying about your clutch. In a manual transmission vehicle, you should use it as you like, besides riding it. Dumping it won't hurt it. Slipping it a bit won't hurt it. If you have to change it out every year or two, big deal. Learn how to do it yourself; clutches are cheap. I drove the hell out of my '86 for years with the same cheap FMS HD clutch, and it gripped as well the day I blew 3rd gear out as the day I put it in.

Drive it hard.

The stock clutch is crap. You should be happy when it wears out and you can put a nice one in.

emerg brake cable?? I dont think I have used an e-brake in 40 yrs. I understand that maybe the rear calipers may not wear properly if you dont use it occasionally .........but I'm stubborn.

Why would you want to start in 2nd?

Start in first, go to second, then third, etc.

I think you get the idea.

He probably has the 'its my first manual and I find changing gears especially with 3.55s a chore'



When i first got the car I thought 'man this is annoying having to change gears so often'

the clutch will wear faster but there are times i start in second. like when cops are around and i want to make even less noise. just enjoy the car, eci is correct, the clutch is garbage anyway. i am going to change mine out sooner then later anyway

So I'm trying to figure out why folks seem to think the stock clitch is crap....
I have 40k miles on my 05, it's a daily driver and I've been known to drive it like its stolen from time to time

I've done several of burn outs in this car over the years (2000 rpm dump he clutch and enjoy) and the clutch still grips just as good today as it did in Nov 04.

The stock clutch is crap and the stock 3650 is crap. I had to have my 3650 replaced with 8k miles on it due to dropping second gear synchros and then the clutch went out so I replaced it with a Spec 3 (far superior to stock) and now with 24k miles on the car second gear synchros are going out again. The 3650 sucks.
