Still toying with the idea about whether to get a spoiler or not on the '05.
So, by getting one, how effective is it? At what speeds does it need to actually keep the rear down and not get too "light" in the back end?
Or is the spoiler entirely decorative?

Actually from what I've read spoilers in general do not kick in until about 60-75 mph.
In the case of the mustang 99% it is decorative.
Of course you could buy an airplane wing and staple it ur trunk......but then we'd have to ban u for going rice burner.

Its for looks. I personally like the spoiler, even if it is not functional, and therefore it'll be on my order sheet (though us Canucks don't exactly have a choice....no spoiler delete from what we've read).

That spoiler is 100% ornamental unfortunatley...
Just like Dan, I am stuck with the spoiler, but the more I look at it the more I don't like it.
When I order the car I will be contacting Ford dealers in the Buffalo area (1 hour drive away) and seeing if they have a spoilerless sonic car on the lot to swap decklids with. That will probably be cheaper than paying a bodyshop to pull the spoiler (my estimate, around $250)

Personally, I don't like the spoiler. I ordered my '05 GT without the spoiler. The only spoiler I'd want would be a suble ducktail type of rear spoiler. It would be nice if we had some photos of the GT without the spoiler.
On the current Mustang, I like way the Bullit looks without the spoiler. It looks cleaner in my opinion.

I'd have to disagree in regards to its functionality, I'm sure it does function well to increase drag, preventing overly high top speeds and trap speeds as a safety measure, not to mention the oh-so useful increase in dead weight for like safety purposes. I mean, it's not like we're interested in having real, functional performance over the shallow appearance of such anyway, right?
Seriously, while some spoilers are actually there for a purpose, this ain't one of them (a close look will show it has the aerodynamics of a bard door). In my opinion, it really is a rather generic and trite performance ornament tacked on by the marketing department ("Gosh, every fast car has just gotta have a spoiler so every mouthbreather knows it, right?").
I do hope Ford rethinks having a delete option on that geegaw.

IMO I couldn't tell much difference with it on or off. I'd probably leave it off but thats just me. The only reason I would leave it off is because they are a pain to clean underneath.

Btw good topic. I was wondering about the effectivness of the spoiler but didn't think to post it.
I am going to have to see them in person to decide. I think in some people's case it's more what other people think instead of themselves. "Everyone may think I have a v6 or a slow car if it doesn't have it."
If I decide to get a vert I won't get one I know that.
BTW when was the first factory mustang gt with a spoiler built?

The mouthbreather in me says," I'm getting the spoiler." I like the way it looks and would feel naked w/o it. B)

Yeah, I'm still trying to decide. It pretty much goes against my own rules to have one...because I really want function over adding dead weight...although I guess I'm also going against my rules by getting the Shaker 1000, that adds pretty good weight too.
