Mustang GTs were not made for gas mileage. They are made to enjoy driving. Shift it wherever it lifts your skirt the most and forget about those extra 2 or 3 mpg.
Yeah but there's no reason not to get the best mileage you can when you are in situations you can't really have fun, IE when theres enough traffic out you can't really get on it.

Gas milage? Well I guess you have to pay something to have a little fun! A gallon over here is $6. And I still refuse to drive anything but an american V8. (My wife drives the audi and the cayenne) :P

I shift out of first at about 3k-3.5k and between 2.5k and 3k for the other gears (because it really sounds great in first off the line).

Milage isn't great but I'm not even at 800miles on her yet so hopefully it will improve.

Another thing to note, if you are using the heater while driving, you're milage will definately go down. I do and that would explain part of the crappy milage.

Mines been at 17 or better for every tank. It just past the 500 mile mark so im guessing about another 1,000 miles and it should really start to loosen up. The cold weather is not helping the mpg, and at 1,500 miles I will be switching to royal purple synthetic oil and this should make a difference also.

Just shift at 5000 and have fun!
That's where I shift. I'm getting 17.2 mpg. Of course, I live out in the country and can get it up to 80 in 3rd with noone around.

The heater hurts mileage? I knew the AC did because of the air compressor, but isn't the heater just piping in heat already being generated by the engine? Why would that cause a significant decline in gas mileage

as long as you dont use AC'd heat. Heater without AC on won't hurt, I don't see why it would.

I used to get 14mpg around town (almost zero highway, all short trips).

Then I got my SCT tune, and now I am driving much more aggressively, and getting about 11mpg!!!

It isn't the SCT tune that is doing it, it's my driving habits. I'm on the power all the time (grin)

For best gas milage, try to keep the RPMs over 1500 (so you don't "lug" the engine) but under about 2600, and tread lightly on the gas pedal...
Lugging causes excessive head pressures and greatly increases wear and tear on the engine internals.
If I drove mine like that I would probably be getting 20 mpg with 40/60 highway/city miles.

Yeah right, that's why you bought a mustang GT

I am not an expert nor have I actually done test, but I thought I read somewhere that all things effect gas mileage.

ie - Rear defroster, heater, seat heaters, ... anything that draws
power. Since that will put a strain (even if it is small), it will effect gas mileage.

I'm not an expert either, but, I can't see those things significantly affecting mileage. In theory, I suppose it could cause a little drag on the alternator and affect mileage, but, I can't see that being more than tenths or hundredths of a mpg.
