Yesterday I filled my car up for the first time, I figured out my gas mileage and it turned out to be 15mpg I had a 50 mile drive home from the dealer (highway) and the rest was in town driving. I have been shifting at 3000-3500rpm is that ok or is it killing my gas mileage? I have always had a auto before and this is my first stick. Any tips? Thanks guys~ Kevin

My mileage is picking up a bit now (1400 miles), but stunk when I first got her home. You might try shifting earlier (2000-2200 rpm). I am in heavy traffic most of the time, so I don't expect it to ever get real good, but it is definately better with some miles on it.

Generally, the lower you shift the better, as long as you arent lugging it.

If you're just cruising around 3500 is a bit high to run a v8 every shift, I didn't even shift my 4 cyl that high up. 2200-2500 seems to be good for me mileage wise so far, very first tank and I'm getting over 20mpg.

Since you have the IUP, maybe it would be a good idea to check out the "mileage meter" in the message centre. It would probably be helpful for you to know when to shift, etc. It also shows your instantaneous mileage.

Shifting at 3,000 RPM or higher will kill your gas mileage in the GT. I try to shift at around 2,500 RPM, which leads to respectable gas efficiency.

Don't worry as your girl gets alittle older you will see an improvement. I started out at 16mpg when I first got her and now she is getting 20.7 all NYC traffic.

I agree on the shifting points for best gas mileage: Shift between 2200 and 2500

At stock my first couple of tanks yielded 18mpg as I put more mileage on her the gas mileage improved. I was up to 20.4mpg before my tune. I haven't been to fill her up since my tune, so I don't know what I am getting now. I will know next time I get to the pump. Who buys a v8 for gas mileage anyway

I have been trying to keep the RPM under 2k when just driving (I do have fun every once in awhile to stretch its legs), my gas mileage has been high 16's in city.

I shift around 2,500 rpm and cruise around 2,000 rpm and I am getting on average 23 mpg. Have 3,000 miles on the car now.

Mustang GTs were not made for gas mileage. They are made to enjoy driving. Shift it wherever it lifts your skirt the most and forget about those extra 2 or 3 mpg.

Lugging it is where your engine RPM's are too low and you are about to stall it. The car jerks forward continuously until you press the clutch in, press the gas more (which sometimes helps, sometimes not), or your car stalls.

I'm with you......this car is too much fun to drive to worry about gas.

Have you ever dropped down to below 1000rpm while driving around, and your engine started shaking a bit and making noise? That's what I mean when I say lugging it. There's a technical explanation but I'm not good with that kind of stuff.
