Hello everyone, I recently installed my Hurst billet short throw shifter in my 07, and I'm having a few problems. First off, I have a lot of play when in gear, the bushings looked decent when I installed, and I have since snugged and the bolts on both ends of the linkage, but the play seems to be coming from where the linkage rod meets the transmission, (I can wiggle it side to side while it's in gear). 2nd thing, since I installed the new shifter, I've been getting locked out of 4th gear at high RPMs, (5000+). Can anyone help me with this? Should I buy the steeda bushings and hope for the best? Or could something be loose on the Trans, thanks again for any help!
I had this problem with my stock shift last fall. Stock shifters normally have a little play in them but what happened with mine was the bolt that attaches the shifter to the top of the trans came loose the the shifter just fell off. It might have to be tightened up and have some orange lock tight on it try not to use red for its a lot more difficult to get off if it has to be taken off for some reason. This is what the block looks like that the bolt is through. If you get under the car and reach up on top of the trans you will feel it.
I have the Hurst competition short throw shifter in my 06 gt and a shop installed mine and mine does the same thing , when I have it in gear I can move the shifter back and forth and wiggle it around but it's always been like that... mine just don't shut me out of any gears...I just thought that was the way they was cause it works fine but it is loose while in gear....
I believe there is always some slop in the shifter when in gear no matter what shifter you have. I may be wrong. Also I dont think a short shifter take that out neither. Maybe there is a bolt or a nut loose or something along those lines that may be jamming it up.
When I had a Hurst shifter in my 05 GT there was no slop whatsoever. It was very crisp. Felt like a toggle switch with very positive engagement and no extra movement. I had it installed by a local shop that also ran their own drag car on weekends.
Well proven wrong maybe the bushings. I dont have a short throw shifter but maybe some time in the future. I was looking at a Barton but the you know bills and stuff.
Maybe I should check mine out... it was already in my car when I bought it but the guy told me he had the shifter and the headers installed at a shop but something could be wore out or come loose since he had them put in....

The shifters do not change the OEM bushings for the link nor the attachment point on the shift rail or shaft up on top of the transmission. Any "play" that existed in the linkage bushings from the stock shifter to transmission shift shaft when stock will still be there with an aftermarket Hurst or other shifter. The shorter "throw" length comes at a cost of increased effort. There are bushing kits available to tighten the play up, I have one but just haven't installed it yet. Plastic gets replaced by brass. It holds great promise. I did have some verticle play in my shifter, a Hust billet ... maybe 1/32" ... but that was not the source of any shift quality issues. I did apply grease to that ball fulcrum to dampen any noise transmission up the stick to the ball though.
Yes that's what I was thinking. Does anyone know what that block is called where it says three here on the picture, that's where mine came apart and when I do eventually get a shifter I want to replace that bolt that's in there. Dont trust the one in it any more than the one that fell out.

I too have looked online for that bolt with shaft on it. I don't hammer the shifter, but when I put these bushings in, I'd like to have a bolt "on hand"
It goes through a "block" and bushing with a hole and locks it on the ball end of the shift shaft, it has to be able to wiggle left - right but the pin part rotates the shifter in your hand with the shift shaft on the transmission top. The shifters have no "gates", any gates felt are inside the transmission.
I figure anything else screws up, I can make or fix. But I'd like to have that bolt.

Yeah I know what you mean, that bolt fell out on me when I was in fourth gear one day had to drive it home in 4th for about 3 miles. I got a grade 8 bolt from a local steel and metal place that worked but it went through the hole not screwed into it. Also put a lock nut on it with some loctite. Hopefully it stays together.
