If you don't want to mess with stereo installs just go for the 500 or 1000. I listened to the 1000 and its sound quality was good but does not have great dynamics most likely due to cheaper amps. I liked the front door mid-bass, which helped to bring the soundstage up a bit.

I decided to just get the base stereo for mine and go aftermarket. My system will cost me more money that a 1000 and it will be partly done by me and an install shop. It's not going to be a booming system, just a single 10in in the trunk with an expensive set of high power components up front. The downside is it will cost more than the factory 1000 system, won't be included in the financing, cause me to do some more work on the weekends, be without my car while it's in the audio shop.

I am a big audiophile so this is important to me. If you like the sound of it go with the 1000 but if you don't like it go aftermarket. But you could very well spend a lot more than the 1000 to make you happy.

I went with the 500 in mine, not because I thought the sound of the 1000 was weak or bad or anything, just couldn't justify $1200 for two speakers and an amp. I've got 2 12" RF sub-comps and a 450Watt MTX amp that I removed from my SVT Focus (had the Audiophile 9006 which was a pretty decent system). The standard box I used in the Focus slid right in to the back trunk space in the Mustang. Had a shop run the wires for me (total cost $60). The added sound is awesome, I get lot's of compliments. Here's the breakdown
2xRF 12" subs - $300
450 Watt MTX Amp - $200
Box - $80
Gold plated wires - $60
Install - $60
Total - $700
Savings compared to shaker 1000 - $500

And yes, I can still stick my golf clubs in the back.
