sell my '66 for a shelby gt?
I'm past the classic car phase unless its a resto-mod myself. If it were a GT350 fastback I would keep it forever. I'm not sure if I would go with the SGT as its replacement though.... Wait for the Bullitt maybe.
There's no way its 29k though, the salesperson is an idiot and just looking up the core car. at 29k its not even that loaded before it goes to shelby. I saw one not to long ago with TAN interior and the rubber steering wheel, duh. The 54U package is way overpriced to start with. Nice ones start at 31k MSRP+the 8300 for the bolt on package. Again, I would wait for a real SE, like the Bullitt. Replace something special with something that is also TRULY special.

I'm definitely in the minority here. I like Mustangs, but I'm not a fanatic. I have a 67 Fastback I'm in the middle of letting go. I've also had a 05 GT since Jan.05. I finally decided to part w/ the Fastback 'cause the price was right, it needed more attention than I could give it, and it afforded me the funds to continue the mods on the 05GT. Now the 67 will be in the hands of a local enthusiast who plans a full restoration. I don't regret it yet.
I liked having a first gen muscle car, but honestly like the 68 Camaro as much as a run of the mill Mustang. If my 67 fastback was driveable, maybe I would never had sold it, maybe I'd never own a 05 either. But I love the modern performance, safety, creature comforts, and driveability of the S197. I don't see the point of paying the extra cash for the ShelbyGT either. For less $$ you can turn a normal GT into a better performing car, tho it won't have a "signed plaque" from Carroll.
So don't worry about how we feel. Do what feels right for you, whatever makes you happy.

so my dad decided to give the dealer a call and finally after a few days found somebody who could tell him about the car...they called it an aftermarket "package" that was 'tacked' on to a mustang gt and carrol shelby signed the dash....their terms for the dash plaque....they wanted 45K for it, and said it was just a "goof" on their part for not putting the shelby sticker in the window...and he asked my dad if he was interested in the car for him or his son, and of course he said his son and the guy at the dealer said he would REFUSE sale of the car to anyone who he knew would give it to a "kid" to drive....wtf is that? glad my hopes were never up or anything...stupid dealers
03/04 Cobras are continuing to creep up in value as the GT500 is so expensive. They hit a low point after the 04's rebates and the new car, but after they dried up on lots, they have a new surge in value(or at the least not continuing to loose value). Cars are depreciating goods in general-its a thing, it gets old. Having fun living life however becomes more valuable every day you get older. Do what? Hang on to something for 10 years so its worth $18k instead of $13? In 10 years it will be due for a $30k refresh.
I wouldn't hang onto a car for 10 years because of some theoretical 'value'. If it was an all original GT350, sure, its a 6 figure car, or if it was in the family from day one, but a normal notch coupe....Not buy something for 10 years because it could be worth a few thousand more? eh, in the 80's everything new was such junk that the 60s cars were fun performance cars, by today's standards.... no way I would pass on the new gen for an old car. If you like it, keep it, if you're bored, move on to something different.

i have a dealer here thats happy to sell 2 of them at sticker - pm me if youre interested (i think they care more about making money than who buys the car) black and white one - both of these are autos..
besides i am sure theres others who are happy to get rid of them.

i was actually surprised to see these on the lot - they also have a blue gt500 and GO gt500.
unfortunately for them, the guy that was my salesman was a complete idiot and his idea of a walkaround was "kick-***" this and "kick-***" that... and then told me how hes putting a 6 litre engine in his 6cyl mustang.
i ended up getting the car from another dealer (well - actually the wife bought it there) but i think if they had even offered a test drive i may have had a different car today.
i think some dealers are complacent and dont treat the customers well.

I once thought about selling my '65 for an '03 Terminator Vert a couple years ago...but decided against it.
i would not get rid of the 66 ......but i am playing alittle favorities here....i also have a 66 and that`s where my screen name comes from also it is something me and my dad have worked on and means much more to me than any other car could...i have not rushed restoring it...i am still not done i have the car since jul/aug of 01 and i am at the point that it just needs to be sprayed and have the interior done...and then i am done ....so what i think you should do is hold on to the car and take your time.......

The 66 will keep appreciating in value. It may never go through the roof given the numbers they were made in, but if you keep the 66 you have some type of stable investment.
The shelby GT will start depreciating from the moment it leaves the lot. Shelby or not, they made enough of them that they will depreciate almost as bad as every other mustang. Which is not bad as new cars go, but not good compared to the 66.

You could hang on it for 30 years and get killed on the way the auction. Live in the now. Again, unless you spend 25k+ keeping up on it at some point, it will not hold any value, and it will probably go up at the rate of inflation only. Sorry, but I couldn't imagine taking a 66 coupe over my current car. I had two restored 67's and a 69 (firebirds). One was a 450hp resto-mod(as far as those go back in 1990 tech-4wd urethane bushings, tubie control arms, fuel injection, ect). Don't take it the wrong way, but I just don't see what's fun about a 289 66 mustang
Strip it to the bare, full new modern suspension, 14" brakes, 03 cobra crate motor with 6-speed, full electronic interior, recaro seats, ect, and maybe....If I had a collection of cars and this was one of my projects, sure. But as my weekend hangout car?
