Question

From FMCDealer today.............This will give you an idea of how slowly the launch will start off.

its gonna be awhile..... From Ford today YES the #2 means TWO cars

To: All Ford Dealers
Subject: 2005-MY Mustang Start Up Scheduling for Select Dealers

Background
As committed by Steve Lyons at the recent Spring Dealer Meetings in Las Vegas, all Dealers, including Select Dealers, will have the opportunity to have two 2005-MY Mustangs scheduled during the *** October start up allocation period.

2005-MY Mustang Start-up Scheduling for Select Dealers

The Select Dealer *** October start up allocation period will be Week 26 (July 1 –7,2004) and Weeks 36 – 39 (September 9 – October 1, 2004).
Select Dealers will be contacted by their Region to choose one of the following options:

opt-in for the scheduling of (2) 2005-MY Mustangs
or

opt-in for the scheduling of (1) 2005-MY Mustang,
or

opt-out completely of the scheduling of a 2005-MY Mustang. If a dealer prefers to opt-out, completely, a 2005-MY Mustang will not be scheduled during *** October start up.
Regions will schedule one 2005-MY Mustang for every Select Dealer that opts in prior to scheduling a second for Select Dealers that opt in for the second 2005-MY Mustang.
There are no guarantees that the first units scheduled during the start up will be the first ones received by dealers. Other variables, such as commodities and transportation, can delay the arrival of these units.
Allocation of the 2005-MY Mustang Convertible option will be determined at a later date.
Resumption of Normal Scheduling for Select Dealers

After the 2005-MY Mustang start up scheduling, Select Dealer allocation will be based on the standard "sales and availability" formula. The formula is based on weighted 2003-CY retail sales and registration history.
It is not anticipated that the 2005-MY Mustang will be on the Select Dealer Monthly Allocation program (free demand) until some time in the first quarter of the 2005 calendar year and when production can support demand.

Kevin,

How soon do you expect large enough numbers so the average joe can walk in and get one?

Yeah exactly.
170,000 a year +
And in the first 2 months of launch, you only get 2 cars per dealer?

If thats the case, you better be FLOODING in November/December.

I have a feeling, they are going to be producing in such huge numbers, but the ammount of cars that will be held back pending quality tests will be NUTS.....

They don't want to mess this up, but in the end it enrages us 'enthusiasts' because the time delays.

I'd rather they lie to us and say "JOB1 is Oct30" or "JOB1 is Sept7, however quality tests will release the cars in Late October"

look like if you want to be the first on the block to have one you will pay through your teeth... I bet there will be some dealers marking up the first batch.

Figure a 2 car "batch" is still 10,000 units to make, hence the delay between the two dates. This is why I have that "cool your jets" attitude about ordering and a and x plans etc right now.

Okay, I was told by a dealer that I could come in this Monday and place my order with a non-refundable deposit of $1,000. When can I realistically expect delivery of the car?

honestly, between october and december. By luck the "right" one may roll at another dealer before your vehicle comes in.

Should he be paying a non-refundable deposit at all?

No, it should be refundable.

I'll still be ordering, I'll make sure I'll get the exact one I want. Even if D-Plan isn't much off, I won't be paying over sticker so as long as I get one of the 2 my dealer gets I'll be fine.

Well I would think you would have to put a deposit down so the dealer knows that you are actually interested in the car and won't back out once the vehicle comes in.

Well, I don't think it really matters whether it is refundable or not, I am definitely buying an '05 Mustang. There isn't another vehicle on the market that I am even considering.

If I order one it probably won't be until sometime in November/December anyway. For those of us waiting it doesn't look like we will have the chance to see many of the colors/options on the lot before ordering though because of the limits. Looks like many pictures will be needed to choose!

How is that ripping me off, I am going to put it towards the down payment anyway, I plan on putting down a $2-3K down payment on top of what I get on my trade.

I plan on paying for mine CASH. Every cent. But I would never dream of putting a non-refundable deposit down. What if (god forbid) something happens to you and you can't afford the car anymore? Thats $1000 down the drain.

Well the only way I would lose my job is if I commit a crime and I am not planning on doing that anytime soon. I don't see why a dealer would accept a refundable deposit. What would stop me from coming back when the car came in and saying that I don't want it, give me my deposit back and then the dealer is stuck with a car that he may not be able to sell.

Ok, so you've got job security. What if you get into a car accident or such? You know what I'm saying.

I've never heard of a dealer not having refundable deposits. All the ones I've contacted have been refundable. I'm not trying to turn you away from buying the car, I would just make sure that if worst came to worst you can get your money back.

edit: Kevin, in that email it mentions "Select Dealers" a few times. What exactly makes a dealership a "Select Dealer"?

Are you talking about a car accident that would end my life, or even if I am hospitalized (I have 100% medical coverage with no deductibles, so no money worries there) and I am unable to drive again for the rest of my life, I am sure I could find someone that would buy the Mustang from me.

Why are you being so difficult? All we are trying to do is help you out. A non-refundable deposit is a very uncommon practice for cars.
