Scam on synthetic oil ?

Hi !

I went to the dealer and asked to have synthetic oil instead of regular oil for my maintenance. It is clearly stated on the order to fill with synthetic oil . However when I looked in the service area at the oil change process at a distance, I found out that the bottles used for oil were with all white lettering, whereas the full synthetic bottle is yellow lettering (I checked on the website).

I am pretty convinced they have put normal oil instead of synthetic oil.

By the way synthetic oil price is double as compared to regular oil.

What do you guys think ? Is there an easy way to check my oil ?

Thanks !

Easy, yes. Free...no. Go to www.oaitesting.com and order a sample kit. Take the sample from your oil, and send it in. It's only about $20 for the sample. Compare the results to known virgin oil samples on www.bobistheoilguy.com forums. If you want, once the results get in I will help you figure out what is what...I have a little experience on that site. Just PM me and we'll see what we can figure out.

I worry about this sort of thing myself when I take my car in, be it scam or an otherwise simple mistake of forgetfulness. I wish there was a better way to help your situation that I could think of. I guess this problem is a fine reason to buy the necessary items to do-it-yourself..

I buy my own oil and filter at Wally world and have a local shop change it for me, maybe you could consider something like that.

Yep - that is why NOBODY touches my car.

When I had my 05 in for warranty on a leaking power steering hose, I stood out on the shop floor and watched the entire service procedure. The guy did a good job, but even so, I would have rather done it myself.

I too have done my own oil changes in the past, but have been letting the dealer do it lately. I have not had an oil change on the mustang yet, but they have been doing it on my 07 EB Expedition. I keep all records and that way there can be no dispute if there is a question regarding the engine while in warranty.

I can understand it if you can't change your oil due to your location (Condo, gated community, apartment) but if you're living in a house or an area where they allow you to change your own oil, do it yourself. It's easy and most places that sell motor oil will take it back for recycling free of charge (Autozone, Advance Auto, and Wal-Mart).

BMW dealers appear to offer free maintenance for 4 years. The recommended oil change interval for BMW and Audi cars is 10k miles (no time limit), but the dealers will change it 1 a year if you don't reach 10k miles. It seems the superior German cars can safely run synthetic oil for longer periods of time.

Interested to hear if you get the sample kit. I wouldnt let those idiots touch my car unless its something I CANT do. I changed my oil today. Full syn was close to $7 per quart. I had to go to FORD to get the filter and those tools told me it only took 5 quarts. Nope, 6. They cant even get that right.

I do my own oil changes and use Mobil 1 and Motorcraft 820s filter and get both from WM for about $27.00. I also keep my maintenance records on MyFord website.

The MyFord website is a great tool to keep track of maintenance and $$ spent on the car. I use it all the time. Well, anytime I do anything to the car which is not often....even at 25K miles a year. 7500 mile oil change intervals helps keep maintenance to a minimum.

That is an excellent idea on getting the bottles back. That ensures they use the stuff you bring them. By the way, anyone that has an Advance Auto Parts store in their area can get Valvoline Synpower Full Synthetic oil for half price. $2.74/qt is a fantastic deal for some really great quality oil. Go buy some right now, and store it until your next oil change. If you take it somewhere and have it done for you, just bring that oil with you. Great deal.
