Rotor Pro rotors rusting?

Anyone who has zinc plated Rotor Pro rotors, are they rusting?

Mine are and I only put them on a little over three months ago and have only cleaned them with water, no chemicals per Rich's instructions but it looks like the Zinc plating it flaking off now. It's rained maybe four times down here in that time with a pretty heavy ran yesterday.

Here are a couple pics.

That looks like pretty normal rust run off when rotors get wet. You should see the rust streaks I get on my rims after not driving the Stang for a few days then driving out in our Seattle rain.

As for the zinc flaking off... doesn't surprise me since brake rotors can get up to 900+deg real quick. Maybe that rotor wasn't washed properly when they zinc plated it.

True but if I am not mistaken the plating is supposed to last longer then 3 months. Not talking bad about Rotor Pro's either, just looking for info on them. I am going to contact Rich from there to be sure. Just curious is anyone else has them rusting like this so soon.

Yea I sent an email to Rich at Rotor Pro. I knew they wouldn't last forever but with only 3500 miles on them and 3+ months it seems to soon.

I had a huge disappointment with a set of Rotor Pro Premium rotors which I replaced after 2 months of use with the current PowerSlots because they rusted and looked weird all brown in the holes and slots. Absolutely no regrets with the PowerSlots, in fact the braking has improved and there's not a spot of rust on them.

Hey there,

The brake guys here tell me that the zinc plating should help to resist rust for years, not just a couple of months. MAYBE they just had a bad batch?

Yea I just spoke with Rich via email and he concurs that it looks like an odd situation. I asked if this is something I can exchange out for a new set. Will see what happens.

Bill, thanks for the info, I may have to do that.

My right rear Rotorpros rotor is looking pretty rough but I've had them on for almost a year now in all kinds of weather including salt. The others are holding up pretty well outside of some minor surface rust. Much better then my R1 Concept rotors that had surface rust everywhere after the first car wash.

Rich got back to me. It looks like the only thing I can do is what Tom (89Trooper) did and paint them. Rich said to use VHT paint so it looks like I have a project down the road. The hubs are still good, it's just the edges. The only thing they can warranty is cracks and warping. All good, I'll see what I can do with the paint.

Thanks all.

GPS,This is normal for the rotorpros. Buy VHT high temp clear coat . Clean the rust off thoroughly. Then spray the whole entire rotor ,let dry thoroughly, then put them on. The brake pads will take off what you don't need and the rest will remain protected w/ clearcoat. There is a thread about it on TMS. Do a search

Thanks

All good, and Rich was very responsive, no waiting around for a reply. Thumbs up for good customer service.

Make sure when you run the rotors for the first time after the paint drive and brake hard and often. You want to make sure you clear all the extra paint. Trust me bad things will happen if you dont. I know first hand...

So,..clear coating them will completely resolve that rusted look while parked or just after driving again some?My stang is an outside car,so i really wonder.I want that to change so bad since most of my rotors are exposed from aftermarket rims.

It's great that you got a quick response but why offer and pay more for a Zinc coating if it isn't going to last. Sounds like the warranty isn't much.

The Warranty is for cracking and warping and the Zinc coating is mainly for protecting the hub which mine are still plenty good. They do offer an option to purchase the rotors pre painted as well. I didn't choose that option.

Correct. If I am not mistaken you have to request the painted ones and they cost a bit more.
