Rear Gear ID

Newbie here,

I have a 2006 GT, how can I tell what gears are in the rear?
Are there any ID tags or VIN decoders?

Thx

There used to be a link where you could enter your vin and it would pull up the original window sticker. But I'm not finding it now... maybe lost in the crash... maybe another member saved the link?

I can't access my files at the moment because.... doing a major back-up thanx to the tms reminder

There should be a tag on the differential that will indicate what gears are in there. Somewhere in the number it will say 3:31 or 3:55.

If they are still the stock gears, they are 3.31 if you have an auto trans, and 3.55 if it's a manual. There were no options in 2006 model year.

Here you go... try this and see if it says on the Window Sticker:

The window sticker creator tool uses your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) to reproduce your original Window Sticker in .pdf format. It's definately a cool little tool if you would like to have a copy of your old window sticker. To use the creator tool just paste the link below into your browser and add your VIN number right after the "=" symbol.

Thanks for all the info.

I was able to download the window sticker from that link, but it doesn't indicate the gears.
It is an auto though, so it's probably the 3.31. I'll look for the tag mentioned.

Thx for the help!

All 2005-2010 GT automatics were 3.31's from the factory.

Are you the original owner? If so then yes 3.31. If you are the second owner, then it is possible, though highly unlikely, that they could have been changed.

Why is it "highly unlikely" that the gears have been changed if he's the second owner? Changing gears is one of the most common mods done to our Mustangs. 4.10's went in my '07 GT when the car was just 2 weeks old. Look in everyone's signatures here and you'll see a huge percentage of us have already swapped gears!

And, the factory tag on the cover doesn't mean diddly if the gears have already been swapped. If you want to figure out gears, you can calculate them easily from the following formula that I just whipped up. Drive down the freeway in 5th gear (overdrive) at 60 mph and check the rpm's at a steady cruise then plug into this formula (which assumes stock tire height).....

Automatic Trans 05-10 GT's: RPM's / 514 = Gear Ratio

Manual Trans 05-10 GT's: RPM's / 485 = Gear Ratio

For example, in my 07 GT automatic, I turn 2100 rpm's at 60 mph, so 2100 / 514 = 4.08 (I have 4.10 gears).

I said highly unlikely because while you and I as a Mustang enthusiasts had it done, we are but a very small portion of the Mustang buyers and owners. If you showed me 10 Mustangs GT's from the random public, I'd be surprised of more than 1 in 10 had the gears changed.

I've got a '91 LX and I'm the 4th owner, atnd it still has the stock rear gears.

That was what I was going to say.

Around my neighborhood, I mostly see V6 Stangs, GT's are rare. Even more rare are modified GT's (from what I can see/hear).

You guys are killin' me here! If we're talking about just GT's, I'd say more than 1 in 10 have had gear swaps. Still, the possibility exists that any used GT has had a gear change, so don't rely on the tag for a definitive answer. Use my formula above to be 100% sure.

Hey Brian. I agree completely. Remember...I'm the one that first mentioned it here.

Agreed. That's why I got one of those cool overpriced FRPP diff covers to let everyone know that something has changed in there.
