Rear End Leak...whats wrong?
Rear End Leak...whats wrong?
On Wednesday I took my V6 in to get my 4.10s and T-lok installed at a local Mustang shop.
Picked the car up last night and just drove it home. Everything seemed fine.
Drove the car down the road today and everything seemed fine again. Hit a stop light. Accelerated (not hard) out of the stop light and a vibration started, then a click, and then repetative clicking and clucking begain. Pulled over and saw I was leaking fluid pretty fast, within a few minutes there was a pretty big puddle.
The shop wasn't too far so I drove it to the shop. It was closed, but I left it there.
Does anyone know what happened? They used RTV on the rear-end.
What do I say tomorrow when I go in the morning?

Sounds like the pinion gear got sucked into the ring gear. VERY BAD by the way. Good that you were able to take it right back. I don't think you'll need to say much of anything, the condition of the rear should be pretty obvious. I had that happen a few years back when a shop tried to reuse the crush sleeve and pinion nut on my pinion gear. Let us know what they find. It may not be what I described, but whatever it is, it's not just a leak. Trust me on that one!
Rob,
Is this something they could blame on me? Or will they pretty much have to take responsibility for it?
The car is not a daily-driver so I don't care if it's broke as long as they fix it...right.

It would absolutely be an install issue (or component failure). There's not a whole lot you could do short of putting slicks on it and doing a bunch of flat footed launches. Even then the worst you would likely do is break some teeth which wouldn't lead to the leakage you described. Let them look at it then let us know what they say or if they give you any trouble. Good luck!
Opened the rear end up today and the t-lok was in pieces and put a nice hole in the girdle.
They are replacing everything for free...but I have a few questions.
Can a bad install cause these things to break easier? I know they do break...but i dont have a supercharger or nitrous.
Also, how long are you supposed to wait to drive the car hard once gears and t-lok are installed? I wasn't driving hard before, but I want to be safe.

if they didn't install any one of those components correctly, re-used old hardware, etc, can result in a catastrophic failure like that. It's the nature of the beast. Don't let them tell you that you did anything to cause that.
