Rear Axle Rust

Not sure where this topic goes as its not really a mod but... I looks under the car and realized that Ford did not paint the rear axle and it bugs the hell out of me.

Has anyone attempted to paint and seal it and how tough was it to do it without removing it from the car?

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Thats the same reaction I had when I got under my 05 4 years ago. I got some sandpaper and removed as much of the surface rust that I could then bought a can of Krylon Black in the can and brushed it on. It still looks pretty good with 56k miles on it now. I could have taken more time and done a better job though. Its worth it in my opinion.

I too painted my axle the winter I bought it. I did it rather quickly as to avoid any further rust. I used Rustoleum High-Temp BBQ paint. It works very well.

this is a common thing. Its cast iron so it will get surface rust and stop.. Painting it stops this initial surface of rust all unpainted cast iron gets. Mine had none on it.. Its because its not been in the rain..

Me too, but every winter I keep thinking, "Why not paint it anyway?"
Is there a way to clear coat bare metal?

I actually clear-coated a project for my 8th grade "shop" class. I liked the natural "flaws" in the piece of steel I was using so I found some Rustoleum clear paint.

What grit sandpaper did you use to remove the rust?

It's funny how someone posts this every year. I thought the same thing when I saw mine but realized that Ford has never painted a rear axle.. someone who bought a Mustang in '65 prob said the same thing the first time they saw it!

ford STOPPED painting rear axles in 1979. up to that point all were painted semi-gloss black. he should have oiled down those bare steel parts when first purchased. i did on my '07 coupe 2 1/2 years ago and it still looks as new under there.

just wondering if the paint is thick enough how much more heat the rear end would hold

My '69 is painted but that could have been done later. I doubt it... I just never noticed that late models never had them painted... It's not a big deal but it bugs me...

Thanks for all of the suggestions. The '09 is not my primary vehicle now but it will be so I want to get this done before then...

guess they did paint them before '79 then figured it wasn't necessary.. they tend to do that type of stuff a lot.
