Im just curious what you guys think... do you think its naive of me to expect to pay MSRP for a 2005 Mustang this early (when they first hit the dealership)? I keep reading about markups and whatnot because the demand will be high... I wont overpay for one... so is it realistic to expect to get one the first few months?

People on this site have pre-orders saying they will be paying invoice or only $500 over invoice.

I'm sure if one dealer won't work with you, another will.

Don't pay MSRP. If you do, you are getting taken.

If a Dealership is charging more than MRSP, then I would just have to find another Dealer. Not to mention the fact that I wouldn't do any business with that dealer, for any reason, Parts, Service, etc. That is not doing Reputable Business, and it seems Unscrupulous, If you ask me. I think FORD should step in, and any dealer caught, or reported of selling above MRSP, Should be Reprimanded and should not be allowed any shipments of 05 Mustangs for 1-3 Months! I know the Law of supply and Demand, but I also know of a few other practices, called Gouging, Scalping, and Raping!

Try and get a deal for less than MSRP, but if the dealer can sell it to someone else for more, they will.

Most of the members here that got excellent prices on their cars either used A or X plan or knew someone at the dealership.

As much as I want a deal on my Mustang, it is safe to assume there is going to be a huge demand for the car initially. Once the advertising hits and such there will be a lot of traffic in the Ford dealers.

Yea, you have to figure in how many people are going to freak out when these are seen rolling around. Most likely the best deals will be at more remote dealers that prioritize trucks, but they usually do not have as many mustangs on the lot. Metro areas will sell them full-pop I'm sure. Its going to be a while before we have a non pre-sold retail piece.

Ummmm Its been a while since you shopped for the PT on release(up to $10k over), prius, sienna minivans, mini, any M series BMW, 350z roadsters(and 350s for at least 6 months of the first year), even scions are over msrp right now.

To me, the MSRP is worth it, than the price of waiting. I can't imagine waiting and waiting for the price to go down, as I drive on the highway looking at someone in a GT waving at me as he speeds on by.

Besides, I have the belief that you act on your first instinct. My first instinct when I saw the concept was, "gotta have it, gotta have it"

So, I went and got it.

Yeah, and I remember the premium people were paying for I think it was the 1978 Corvette Ind y pace car edition. When NSX's first came out, my local Acura dealer was asking, and getting, a premium, of 40K over sticker.

You've to be crazy to pay MSRP, let alone anything over.

I have come to the realization that I am going to pay MSRP. I have in writing from my dealer that I will not pay over MSRP. That's fine by me. Some dealers are going to try and make you pay more than MSRP, but don't let 'em.

I used to hate it, and maybe I have just mellowed with age or maybe it is that I am earning a lot more now than when I ordered my 1994 over ten years ago, but I do not see paying list as being too bad of a deal anymore. From what I have seen, the markup on Mustangs is pretty low anyway, comparatively. According to Edmunds, a 2004 GT with an MSRP of $26,940 has an invoice of $24,664; that is only an 8.4% gross margin ( (price-cost)/price ). At a smaller scale, if I wanted make money on something I bought for $20, I would want to sell it for more than $21.85. Sure dealers make money on the sale in other ways, but usually nothing substantial (with respect to the price of the car). I am not a car salesman, nor can I generally stand dealing with them, but they do need to make a living. Because of my employer, I should be eligible for the X-plan, so I will try to get it; if it is not initially offered on the 2005 Mustang, I will not lose any sleep.

I haven't paid MSRP since my first car, a 92 LX 5.0 when I was 18, and I'll never pay MSRP again. I don't mind the dealer making money, so I won't insist on invoice price, but I like to feel that I'm getting a deal too. I qualify for the x-plan, and wouldn't buy until a dealer accepts it. I don't feel that will be a problem though.

Most of us preorders will pay full MSRP and like it (or else, lol). No dealer I've heard about is charging OVER the MSRP- just equal to it for the first 2 months or until the car's newness factor starts to wane.

No it hasn't been that long since I have went Car Shopping. And I have seen many dealers selling their cars with things like "Adjusted Market Value" or "Fair Market Value" What a Crock of Sh_t! There is no credible reason for these kind of sales tactics! My Dad was going to buy my Mom a New T-Bird when they came out, but he got P.O.'d when he saw how some of the local dealers were trying to Rape people, just to Cash In on the popularity of a new vehicle! I don't care Which Dealers or how many dealers are doing it, it's just wrong! Anyone that is willing to pay $5-10- 15,000 more than MRSP for any Car is just doing themselves and the rest of the Public a a disservice! And Wasting Money!

How I figure it is that I spend my own money, not yours so please explain. Because selling cars is so competitive, their will always be a better deal. If someone wants to spend their money on a product and it is more than what the rest of us can get, then how is that a disservice? Just a question...

I ordered my Mustang with no set price in writing. I also did not pay any deposit. I bought an Excursion from this dealer several years ago at $100.00 over invoice and told them that is what I was willing to pay for the Mustang. Since I lost my shirt when I sold it, that is the least they could do for me.
The Excursion was ordered in July of 1999 before any had even been maufactured just like the Mustang. Within one months time and less than 1000 miles they were installing a new transmission in it. If anybody reads Autoweek they read my review of the Excursion.
I hope my review of the Mustang will be better.

It's not unfair to add "fair market adjustment" to prices - it's not like the argument against raising chainsaw prices in hurricane ravished FL (although I see nothing wrong with the markup there either!) - this is a luxury product and the price of the merchandise is what the market bares. You can play the market against them and not shop at dealers that "up" their prices - they'll soon lower their prices when the market doesn't produce the demand.. or they'll sell the cars to the people willing and wanting to pay the price.

Ok this scenario. I didnt feel like making a new topic

Around November I plan on getting a Mustang GT and a Ford Ranger at the same day. If I buy 2 cars from ford how good of a deal could I see.

It is Wrong and a Disservice to all in the fact that it condones this type of behavior! You can waste your money any way you want, but stop and think about this, if you are willing to pay anything over a Fair Dealership Mark Up, then imagine what this same dealer will do when you take your car in for service, how much do they mark up their parts?

Your little comment "<span style='color:#FF0000'>If someone wants to spend their money on a product and it is more than what the rest of us can get
" just Fuels the Fire of this debate! This has NOTHING to do with Money all this is Feeding to is Vanity! You will do anything just to be the first on your block to (Insert Object Here).......! How do you know what the rest of us can get?

Anyone with any kind of Business Sense would go to a Reputable Dealer that is banking on Customer Returns to Make money and keep their customer satisfied, rather than Rape Each Buyer to walk into their Showroom, and not give a darn about the Customer Because all they are interested in is Making as Much Money as Possible from every Idiot that Has to be the first on their block!

UGAKarl, As for your Comment about Hurricane Ravaged, not "Ravished" Central Florida (I live in Tampa and went to the Innovation Drive in Orlando and saw the Aftermath, First Hand!), You Diusgust Me! Any person that can sit and Gloat on the Devestation of Peoples Homes and Lives is just Sickening! You would be the person that would Gladly Charge someone 10 times as much as what something actually cost you just to take advantage of someone elses Misfortune! What an incredible Role Model You Are! </span>

Who are you to judge how I decide to spend the dollar that I've earned. Is it going to affect the price of your car if someone pays MSRP or more on a mass produced vehicle such as the 05 mustang? Maybe in the short run, but most likely it will not. If I feel that I've gotten a deal on a car because I've paid MSRP while receiving great service from a knowledgable sales staff, than I have. What is the opportunity cost of trying to widdle down a salesman on MSRP rather than agreeing on a price early and leaving happy? Besides, do you honestly think I care about a few hundred dollars on a car that costs at least 25K? After all, its only money. If you want to wast time agruing over a few hundred bucks, and go running around to seven different dealers, then by all means, have a great time. My time and patience are more important to me. I can afford to lose a little cash if it means cooperation at the dealership and walking away with a smile. It's my dollar and it's obviously worth it for me to spend it how I see fit. Don't tell me I'm doing you a dis service by paying anything. I've earned the dollar I'm spending, not you.
