Ran out of gas
Well, for some reason I didn't get the gas mileage that the readout has been consistetly reading. For the last 2 weeks it said I was averaging 18.8~18.9mpg.according to my calculations , 16x18.8=300.8 miles.
I ran out of gas with 282 on the trip.WTF?? Anyways now I know for sure what the limit is and will never push it again. Do you think I did any damage to the engine by doing this?

best not to let an injected car get below 1/4 tank- if youve ever seen the fuel pumps, the gas actually goes thru the motor, cooling the brushes/commutator/windings...sucking air is rough on the motor...
I dunno if its rough on injectors, but imagine they quit firing as soon as fuel pressure starts to drop to prevent hammering themseves apart.
worst thing about low tank volume is temp sways at night/day...expansion/contraction causes vent to inhale/exhale, which draws moisture into the tank, and condensation above the cold fuel level starts the tanks rusting... I try to keep above 1/2 tank in cooler weather- it cant hurt.
Ive often wondered if a tank ever exploded after someone changed a pump and didnt put enough fuel in for vapor to push air out of the tank...after seeing how it was made, I was sure to dump 5 gallons in to submerge it just in case, when I changed them on my mark vii and camaro.

I wouldn't worry too much about it hurting your engine. If you had a high (80k) mileage car, I might be concerned about fuel pump failure within a year or so but your car should still have low mileage and also still be under warranty anyways.

Question: 2005 Volvo V70 mileage: 20,000. If a fuel injected car runs out of gas, will the engine be damaged?
Answer: Running out of gas should not damage the engine, however, if one were to keep trying to start the engine with no gas, the fuel pump may be damaged.
Isn't that what a gas gauge is for? Calculating from an average doesn't make sense. Conditions and mileage vary. Calculate your gas mileage AFTER a fill up!

Didn't the message center say how many miles you had until empty. I have gotten low, and the only thing the message center says is how many miles till empty. And you can't change that display.

you can change the display if you hit reset...I was going by the average mpg...18.8(this reading has been steady for last three fill ups)So I should have gotten at least 300 miles. Can't figure out why I didn't get that many miles..I was chancing not running out of gas...but my luck ran out
