I live in an area that people move to Buffalo to get away from the snow. All kidding aside my mustang has to be part snow bird. Here is two great links from “Police Fleet Manager”
http://www.pfmmag.com/fall2003/fall2...esnowtires.htm
“Only two generally available tires exist for police vehicles that are both V-speed rated and also Severe Snow rated. One is the Goodyear Eagle Ultra Grip GW2. The other is the Firestone Firehawk PVS.”

I had a 1995 Mustang GT convertible with 18" radials on it that I ended up putting about 400 lbs worth of sandbags in the trunk when I lived just east of Buffalo.
It didn't work with less, but I should have went to a studded tire like a did when I put 4 on my Town Car.
I'm convinced they helped save me from several accidents and I'll run them as long as possible.
The studs unfortunately are not as long as they used to sell it seems.

Don't really know.
Related to this; here in Sweden studded tires are legal, and almost a necessity on icy roads. Snow and mud are fine with regular winter tires, but packed snow or ice requires studs. Anyway, if you drive your car to Germany (which happens) on studded tires, where they are not allowed, I think the Police makes you either switch tires or pull the studs out before letting you go on.
Can you German-residing guys confirm this?

MustangDan, most states that see even some snow during the winter season allow studded tires during certain months. It shouldn't be a problem unless you are spending a lot of time in very southern climates. And, for the most part, that only applies to residents or registered vehicles in the particular state. If it's legal in the state you reside you should be OK when traveling. Kind of like tint, limit is 35% where I live but I can't ticket someone from another state with limo tint if it's legal there.
At the next hint of snow in the forcast I'm getting a set of Goodyear Eagle Ultra Grip GW2's on my cop car, I'm looking forward to seeing how they ride.

Blizzaks come in the stock 235 55R17 tire size. They are pricey but so far they've performed amazing for me on slippery/snowy pavement (almost no sliding whatsoever). Very aggressive tread.
Still waiting to test them on some deeper stuff. Highly recommened.
