Picked up car today couldn't wait!

The above caption is true I got my 2005 GT mustang today in silver. I love the car a lot it's so great! The bad part is Im new to stick shift I got other gears down, but I loath first gear so much. I can shift, down shift, all taht stuff but moving from a dead stop that seems to be the hardest thing with me. But I will post pictures up tomorrow when it is day light out side. It gets dark at 430 which I hate.

Don't worry about the shifting you'll have it down in no time. One thing that helped me was taking the car to an empty lot, putting it in first and slowly letting the clutch out until you feel it start to catch. Any more and it'll stall on you. Get the feeling for where that is and the shifting from a dead stop should get easier.

Congrats on the new Mustang.

Congrats. I agree, you will have first gear figured out in no time. I have never seen anyone who wanted to learn to drive a stick shift, not be able to accomplish it. And you have ample reason to learn and clearly want to....

I could send my dad over to you and you two could go sit at a light on a hill in traffic and he could yell at you a bunch of times until you got the car going without stalling it. That's how I, and I'm sure a bunch of others learned.

I didn't know you could smoke the tires on a 1974 Pinto station wagon--but you can

Congrats, you'll get it in no time. The gears on this car are forgiving in my experience. Just go to an empty parking lot. Stop in one spot, drive forward into another, and then back up to the one you started one, and go back and forth...thats how I learned.

Congratulations and enjoy!! You'll get used to first gear in no time. When I first got mine I had to keep the radio low because I had to be able to HEAR to take off in first smoothly Now I don't even think about it anymore.

Have fun!! Now, I would highly suggest investigating your new purchase by absolutely flooring it in 2nd and 3rd gear (no redline of course). You will need a long open road....

Congrats on the new purchase.

Like everyone else who has posted I promise you, you will figure out 1st gear in NO TIME and then will laugh about all the anxiety you had over it.

My car was my first manual after driving for over 20 years. I was terrified I wouldn't be able to shift correctly and would look like a complete idiot to my 2 teenage boys (who love my car as much as I do!!!). But after just a few days of driving and shifting regularly I picked it up and now never even think about it. In fact now I hate driving my wife's automatic.

Have fun and enjoy the car!!!!!!!

CONGRATS! yea mine was my first stick shift as well and yes, i did stall out a bunch of times when starting from a dead stop. trust me, ull pick it up FAST. i always tell everyone the same thing who ask me if standard shift is hard to drive....if you want to learn youll get it in no time. if you dont, then youll never get it down EVER. just keep at it and soon youll be takin her to the track shaving down even more shift time.

again congrats on the new pony and welcome to TMS

We must all have our memory of THE HILL. Me, it was when I was learning in my friend's 65 VW Bug. I remember going through several light changes before I got moving. Luckily traffic was light. My wife on the other hand learned in a 64 Fairlane Sports Coupe with a 4-speed. In hindsight, a neat car, but at the time it was merely her father's work car.
