Guess what I just discovered?
It pays to check your credit report!
I jumped the gun a little bit and fell in love with an auto, even though I didn't want an auto ATALL but I got blinded by the fact that it was a mustang- so I tried to get it, and got well.......declined. Which I am not upset about because I didn't want an auto, its just hubby loved the yellow. Turns out it was a blessing in disguise. Double because I discovered the below, and in all the time I was trying to see what to do I figured out how to get rid of the olds. I was trying to figure it out because I had no problem getting my olds- and we haven't done anything wrong since then:
So I order off our reports from the big 3- and BOTH of ours are RIDDLED with mistakes- accounts cleared in good standing marked open, stuff that we closed WELL over 7 years ago, things that are not ours. The car I had in 1999 still listed as an OPEN account with a zero balance which counts against us. I was shocked, surprised and angered, and immediately began the process to remove them. Holy SNOT, Here I was feeling low and I find out its easy for mistakes to be listed on your credit reports.
Now am suddenly feeling hopeful again. Im just going to dump all my Eleanor fund into the olds, to pay it off, and use it for a DP this summer- by then all these fakeries will be removed, and I will have my good name back. All hope is not lost afterall. PLUS by then IUP and Manual and Convertibles will be mine for the picking. Hope has been restored!

NOW you are scaring me! I am using the Dave Ramsey bug them till its gone via internet and registered mail method. They allegedly have 30 days to fix it, and if they can't they gotta remove it. Anything that I mine honestly, which is one piddly stupid thing, I am paying off and having marked paid off. Big Business and their lack of customer service amazes me.

There are some dirty friggers out there. Back from when I was young and poor and stupid and didn't know better........But then I got older, wiser and $$er and paid em off, and my past mistakes are still poking me a little bit. I will wash and rinse and clean until you can eat off it.
I got a thing or two on there from many years ago I need to pay off, but hey, thats my fault- when you go to messing with me for something I did correctly........
in the
It had me so down last week I was actually
considering dropping the whole Eleanor quest. THEN I decided nothings going to get fixed if I just sit and mope about it, and BOY I am glad I did.

you know what, I just got done with all this crap, and it's really not hard to get it cleared up, it's just very tedeous and time consuming. I have all of my financial crap in a file cabinet, so I was able to disprove any mistake on my reports, but I had to get a credit report from wach of the reproting agencies and then send them a letter of dispute with copies of everything that was incorrect to show how it was incorrect and they did get it straightened out within the 30 days.
There was just a federal law passed to allow people to get their credit reprot for free once a year from all 3 reporting agencies. Before the law this week, there were only 9 states that allowed 1 free per year. You can find it on the federal trade commission's website... My understanding is that it's supposed to make it easier to dispute a problem and get it corrected as well.
keep pluggin' away, because problems won't take care of themselves, but I would discourage spending money on a lawyer to corect your problem unless there is something that the reproting agencies won't remove because a creditor is disputing it. Then, yeah, get a lawyer if you can't settle the problem with the creditor yourself.
I've had several things cleared up with Experian quickly, one just last month. They were very responsive. It pays to get all 3 reports because the mistake was only on one of them, and you don't know what agency the lender will use.
i just worked on experian first so id have a idea of what would come off the others
although i have a new collection account from AT&T for a cell phone that was paid off in 1999 lol and they said account was made 7/2004

dont forget to check you Fico score too, that is the big determining factor when anyone gives you a loan. make it a goal to get in the 700 and up.Fico scores
Is there any way to actually get your credit report and Beacon(?) score for free.
I'm pretty sure FreeCreditReport.com isn't really free and the new law they just passed won't help me until July - I'm in AL.

Sorry to hear that April, it is a pain to get all that cleared up. It could be worse however! About four years ago I had my entire identity stolen! Drivers license changed, a Gas bill and Electric bill opened in my name.... I even had a Hyundai bought in my name. It was a major mess and took well over a year to straighten out.
The guy was finally tracted down (by me
) and arrested by detectives for several felonies. He, of course, was able to plea down to a single misdemeanor and walk away leaving me wilh a mess of red tape.
I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy! B)

It's a hassel. Most companies are good about reporting your vredit but mistakes happen ALL the time.
Under the Federal Fair Credit Act it's easy, but a little time consuming, to clear up your report if mistakes are made. It’s the same process weather it’s done by you, an attorney or a credit clean-up agency, It should really only cost you a few minutes, couple of photocopies and postage:
1 Get a copy of your credit report
a. https://www.annualcreditreport.com/cra/index.jsp
b. http://www.equifax.com/
c. http://www.transunion.com/
d. http://www.experian.com/
2 Review it at least every two and again 6 months before any major purchase (auto, home, etc); when (not if) you find mistakes; select the primary one you want to clean up first.
a. Best to clean up one item at a time;
b. Numerous requests made at a single time it will raise other flags.
3 Notify each reporting agency IN WRITING. State that you "DISPUTE" the specific reported item providing the account name and number; best to send them a hand written note.
a. Don't go into details, just report the account and what you’re "disputing" and demand to have removed.
b. The reporting company has to provide proof to the credit agency the report they made was valid, you don’t have to prove anything initially.
c. You will be notified by the credit agency within 4-6 weeks the status; normally if your dispute caused the item to be removed or upheld,
i. You only have to provide proof if refuting the reporting company’s provided (4 required items) to the credit agency that the negative claim was substantiated and it’s not removed
d. "Dispute" is a legal term specific to the Fair Credit Act and should be included in your letter.
4 ALSO make sure you:
a. Include in your letter your Social Security number; or numbers if dispute is for a couple
b. Copy of your drivers license(s)
c. copy of one proof of address (bank statement, utility bill, etc)
d. SEND the letter with a return signed receipt requested or by traceable means (UPS, FEDEX, etc), this establishes the starting time frame the credit agency and reporting company have to act.
If you have valid negative reports on your credit report the only thing you can do is stop the bleeding, keep current and wait 3-4 years as your FICO scores improve.
Sorry for the long post; but this will help you when you find you have a credit reporting issue. Depending on what type of mistaken report is made it could cost you up to 100 points on your credit score. This advice will save you hundreds of dollars in attorney / credit clean-up fees by doing it yourself and thousands of dollars if your credit is erroneously reported/compromised.
