275/40ZR18-> 1.4% smaller (travelling 59.2mph instead of 60)
275/45ZR18 -> 2.6% larger (travelling 61.9mph instead of 60)

If your shooting for 275s on the 17s, closest match would be...
Originals 235/55R17
275/45R17 -> 1.6% smaller (59mph instead of 60)
275/50R17 -> 2.4% larger (61.4mph instead of 60)

has anyone been able to find standard tires that come on the 17's with the white letters like the titanium stang that had the 18's? I've been doing a little surfing and can only find BSWs. I figure I must just not know how to shop for tires...they've got to be out there, right?

 

Those were most likely one off tires done for that GT like everything else on it.

However, there is a way to duplicate it. It's called tire effects, or something like that. You pick the color, and Iron it on to the letters. It takes a while to do, but turns out nice just like the car if you do it right.

Back in 97, I had it on my *kill me know* Honda, before everything was riced out.

Now, everyone and their brother has a lowered Honda. I'm glad I got out of rice, before rice got me.

So, is everyone 100% sure that we can put 275's on the stock 17x8 wheels? Want to be certain.

 

If my math is correct, 275s on the stock 17" rim would be 4cm wider than stock. Isn't this too wide for the rim, or can you just fudge it?

 

I do think so. Discounttiredirect.com is advertising different tire and wheel packages for the 2005 mustang. They are on top of thing huh? This is the web site that got me started on this tire option post. I noticed that they were advertising a 275 as an option replacing the stock tires. If you look at the tire & wheel cobo for that tire the wheel they suggest for that tire is a 7.5 inch wheel.Is that right??I don't think the stock wheel is smaller than that. Any help mustang freaks!!!

 

I had inquired about 18" rims from American racing. According to them, when they install them on 2004 Mustangs, they use an 18x10 rim for the rear to hold 295/35R18 and 18x8 to hold 265/45R18 for the front. My guess would be a 7" rim is too narrow for a 275 tire.

 

I had 275's on a 15x7 rim so I know the width is ok for a 275

 

Here's a question: if you go an inch larger on the rear with wider tires, then how does rotation work? Swap the two rears and swap the two fronts? This means your rims shouldn't be directional also or you'll have to pull the tires off?

Is this a good setup? Or is it better to go with a 9" rim all around and put 255's or 275's on all so that you can rotate normally?

If you go to a different width rim in the rear, and run directional tires, you really can't rotate. The tires are stuck where they are. You could go side to side, but that really isn't all that great for the tires, especially directionals. I'm going to run either 255's or 275's all the way around, so i can rotate, front to back. Because I know for sure those rears are going to get heck.

Tires fitting the rims are one thing,
rims with those tires fitting on that car..... are another.

275s WILL fit on a 8 inch wide rim...and those are probably THE maximum you could put on that.

255s are THE lowest you want on a 9 inch wide.... 275s being the norm...

Yes 275's will go on a 7" wide rim. The tire just bulges out more. I have done this before. Ohh and Boomer I have put 295's on a 8" rim . They actually look good on it, of course the sidewall is smaller (forgot what it was) but overall height was 26" tall.

A wide tire on a small rim will drastically hurt traction. 275s on a 7" wide rim is worthless in terms of performance.

 

Okay, so I'm definately going to a 9" rim. The question is.... 255's or 275's?

Would love if I could get everything from the factory. Darn ford. I hope they offer the 18's in the spring.

We should be able to put at least 275 on the stang no? Future models such as the cobra will definately have wider tires. Unless it has to do with different rims/different offset?

Just saying this, because I think some of you think the stock wheels are 7"... the stock wheel is 17x8, as far as I know. But, yes... 275's will fit on the stock rims. Just an issue with performance and traction, like Wolfie said. And because I don't have the extra cash to buy all new wheels/tires, I am going to stick with the stock rubber for as long as it lasts (will be burning a good bit the first few months having some fun), and then just put 255's front and rear from that point on, until I get some 18x9's if I ever decide to upgrade. The stock 235's are 9 and a quarter inches wide, while the 255's are a full 10 inches. So, and extra 3/4" of an inch, along with some half inch wheel spacers should be perfect... for me, anyway. Just a cheaper idea.

Dan: I'd say 275's for the 9" wheels, and 255's for the 8" stock wheels.

 

Well let's see, the standard 17-inch wheels on Mustang GT are 8 inches wide and equipped with Pirelli P235/55ZR17 all-season performance tires for year-round driving.

For my purposes this is all the tire I'll ever need. Mine will be strictly a street stang which will see a lot of rain and some light snow. I don't do drag strip launches or parking lot doughnuts. Nor do I pull 1.g corners around each bend. I like my wheels smaller for better bite, quicker response, lighter and a bit better mileage.. After all the trials and errors I've been through. I learned a very valuable and expensive lesson: Less is more, just something I wanted to share with you guys.
