Ok so I'm moving to Cali.... What do I need to know?

So these past few months I have blown my engine and I am currently about to get her back a little more modified: (I am worried about emissions)

Livernois 298ci
Whipple 2.3
Heads & Cams
Full Exhaust (LT's / Catted Midpipe / Magnapaks)

So I am assuming the exhaust is (especially the LT's) going to be the major issue??? Now I have a question if I can put the car in my dads name here in FL can I escape needing a front Licenses Plate??? Anyways, I have never lived in a smog state so this is my first experience and any help will be appreciated greatly!!!

John, Your safest bet would be to swap engines and exhaust with the OE setup on Shelby GT, which would not be a problem. Then your only concern would be the tag. Why you want to leave So. FL so soon?

It's illegal to drive in Calif. without a front license plate, but I do it. Received a ticket for it while parked, (I think the city I was in use's it as a fund raiser). Getting is smogged, now that will be not fun for you. I would think the best thing to do would be to have registration up to date in Fl., that should buy some time for you to get it all figured out. Or just keep it registered in Fl. and drive with out of state plates. Tell the cops you are on vacation. : )

Kenny Bell is here in So. Cal!!

About 30 mins. from my house! And a shop right next door to them called GTR, that does a lot of their installs.

Unfortunatly putting it back to stock is the only way to get it registered here, it has to have the full stock exhaust with the factory cats so L/T headers are out and as for the front plate it's a must (but most don't do it) but under Cali. law if the car is here more then 6mos it must be lic. in Cal. (plate) if not you will be fined

That is exactly what I'm saying. I'm not sure you would have to put it in your dad's name. Just change the address on the registration to his house. State of Fl. shouldn't care as long as they get paid.

Your right on the six months thing.

you're moving to mira loma? Thats close to me and the kenne belle and GTR shop that another member mentioned.

I've been driving my '11 since last june with no front plate and no problems so far. I keep it in my trunk mounted onto a Craigs drill-free bracket just in case.

GTR is a great shop with an even better reputation

oh woops, I was reading the wrong sig when I saw Mira Loma.

Pasadena is only an hour's drive away from GTR and Kenne Belle's shops which are in Rancho Cucamonga. Really about a 45min drive when there is no traffic. I haven't modded my car yet so I haven't used them personally, but I've heard nothing but good from several members. And I know there shop was used by 5.0 mustangs for dyno tests and stuff like that

281 motorsports is out here
also SMS

Now don't shot the messenger.

You have 20 days from when you establish residency to register the car in Calif. See this link on residency:

Fees must be paid within 20 days of entry or residency to avoid penalties. Any vehicle owned by a California resident must be registered within 20 days of entry into California unless a special permit was obtained. Nonresidents whose vehicles are properly registered to them in their home state or jurisdiction may operate their vehicles in California until they:

* Accept gainful employment in California.
* Claim a homeowner's exemption in California.
* Rent or lease a residence in California.
* Intend to live or be located here on a permanent basis (for example, acquire a California driver license, acquire other licenses not ordinarily extended to a nonresident, registered to vote).
* Enroll in an institution of higher learning as a California resident or enroll their dependents in school (K-12).
http://dmv.ca.gov/pubs/brochures/how...r9.htm#feesdue

You have ten days after becoming a resident to get a Calif Driver License:

If you become a California resident, you must get a California driver license within 10 days. Residency is established by voting in a California election, paying resident tuition, filing for a homeowner’s property tax exemption, or any other privilege or benefit not ordinarily extended to nonresidents.

I understand the law but I need to know how it translates in real life??? I would like to know if I keep the car registered in FL do I need to get a Cali. Licenses Plate? When do I need to get my car smog approved if it is registered in FL? Is there a way to say go to a more lax shop who will let things slide a little? So LT's are not aloud?

If there is a rule bending shop, and they're smart, they won't answer you online - nor would their customers. You're going to have to put boots on the ground.

Its a risk. And California is desperate for money. Many of these bureaucracies have confiscation penalties in their myriad of 'rules'. So make sure the reward is commensurate with the risk.

I would be playing word games and I'm not a lawyer but I think the key words here is "establish residency ". Not to mention, unless you are pulled over for something why would anyone have a reason to check.
