Off the line speed of an automatic GT
Hey guys, my name's Ben and i've been reading these forums since the introduction of the site. i've been to many others, but none of these sites contain the caliber of conversation that this one does. now that that's over, i own a 2005 GT (and am 16 but get to know me first), and was wondering if, from idle, an automatic GT can spin the wheels when flooring? i'm not sure if others can or not but, mine will usually just chirp (traction control is off). It is about 90 out here in texas which may acount for some loss of torque but, i was just curious. for anyone wanting to know, i chose automatic because of the insane traffic down here in houston. any say on this would be greatly appreciated.
The automatic will usually just chirp the tires, but if you a fortunate enough to drive through a puddle very close before stopping then you can get em spinning with the stock tires. Also, powerbrakeing will allow you to get them smokin a little.
btw, the gearing for reverse is actually perfect for getting them spinning as i discovered, but DONT DO IT, it is apparently extremely bad for the tranny.

Congrats on getting the car, Ben, its always nice to see somebody else who is young and responsible and not a spoiled brat with a nice new car. The only down side is, you friends will become very jelous, and hate you for driving that car. But, I found that it is a good way to weed out the true friends from the ones I dont need.

regarding reverse is bad for the tranny.
that's what the warranty is for, better yet the extended warranty......
Another myth...
Turn off the air and traction control. Lightly hold the brake and hit the gas, as soon as you hear the rear break lose let go of the brake...
Mine will lay down a nice set of black stripes doing this.....
The trick is to get the torque converter to lockup before letting lose on the brakes....

as funny as that is, i dont particularily want to destroy my tranny as i would have to be without the car for a few days.
I have Nitto 450 275/50-17s on mine, and I can still spin them from a standing start. Of course, a good powerbrake burnout at the track will make them sticky enough to bite on the launch.
