Thumbs up

This has been posted on the tech forum but am curious as to how many others have this problem. Manual transmission, cruising in 5th gear sometimes get vibration/rattling sound from shifter....sounds maybe like loose linkage or bushings? Shifter does not feel loose itself but the rattling gets louder as speed increases (especially at speeds over 80mph) and especially annoying! No noticable noise in any other gear.

I know it's been discussed before but has anyone successfully had it fixed at the dealer?

well if you come up with a solution let me know, mine does it, doesnt really bother me though its only when I accelerate in 5th gear and you can imagine how much louder it is with the steeda triax in, since it doesnt shield any outside noise.

No solution for me yet. I got a V6 5Spd. Makes a high pitched whining/vibrating noise as if some spring was scraping a metal part. Happens in 3rd and 5th.

I have that problem too. No solution according to the dealer service department. "It's normal" they say.

Anything that involves the dealer not having to work on your car is normal.

that's pretty funny...

One solution is to install an aftermarket shifter like the new Hurst short throw. I haven't heard if it's quieter or noisier, but you can be sure it will feel a lot more solid and positive than the rather flimsy and notchy stock shifter.

BTW, I don't have the noise in mine, but am planning on getting the Hurst because of the less-than-solid feel of this shifter. The shifter in my old '95 GT felt a LOT sturdier than this one, and everyone complained about the SN95 shifters being flimsy!

I took my GT in for a wine at 50mph in 5th gear and the ring and pinion was replaced but did not solve the problem. After returning to the dealer they checked something under the shifter and pulled the plug on the pan to find metal shavings in the pan. I have a transmission on order for replacement. I was told that some of the early 5 speeds were having these problems and replacement was the only fix. I also had problems on occation with 1st gear being had to enter. Hope this helps.

Thanks for all the input. It's amazing how a dealer/tech can tell you something
is "normal" when it didn't do this for the first 5,000 miles Would appreciate if someone could post any results leading to a fix to this problem.

Maybe if we push hard enough Ford will issue a TSB for it???
