I have a '08 GT and when I turn the key on or off there is a clicking sound like an old electric clock ,coming from the dash behind the speedometer and gauges. It last only the gauges on the dash moving to the correct positions (fuel, oil temp, etc )than goes away and everything is normal until It go to start it up again. It does it only when I first turn the key on, no matter if it is cold or just turn it off and on again. Anyone out there know what it might be?

It's likely a door motor for the AC/heater unit. There's one behind the gauges on that side, then two others behind the glove box.

The gauge stepper motors are slowly going bad. My 2006 does the same thing especially on shut down.

 

You're probably right.
I read "noise behind dash" and automatically thought "blend door motor", but if the clicking noise is behind the gauges, it's most likely a gauge motor like you said

I thought that noise was normal. My car has always done that.

 

Only if Ford compares it to another car and finds the same. LOL

Mine does the same and Ford said it's normal.

 

Mine does that too, and has done it as long as I can remember in my '06.

I just figured it's just the gears returning to zero. Much like an old rotary phone.
