New Special Edition Mustang spotted in Detroit

Popular Mechanics has the info at http://www.popularmechanics.com/blog...s/4216963.html

Any clue as to what it might be? PM speculates a stripped down version, similar to the '95 GTS (and the subsequent MY96 special package).

As I read somewhere, the "Pony Parade continues."

And AutoBlog has info here:

http://feeds.autoblog.com/~r/weblogs.../~3/118692785/

The text of the last link reads:

UPDATE: Apparently, we're wrong. We just spoke to someone in the know, who has seen the Bullitt and claims to be familiar with the car pictured. This individual says that this car is NOT the Bullitt, but is another named variant (hence the covered cap in back). The good news is that the same source said that the Bullitt's much cooler-looking than this GT. And here we thought Ford was just being extra-sneaky/slick with the red paint. As for this car, then, we wonder if it's just a minimalist package for the GT, a la the old SN95 GTS (or better still, the 5.0 LX Fox-bodies). We have to admit -- we're curious, and our source refused to divulge any more specifics. In any case, we're all flummoxed right now as the Pony parade continues.

Our friends at Popular Mechanics tipped us off to new shots by Jim Dunne that they've posted on their website. The pics depict a "mystery" Mustang being trailered around Detroit, but the first thing we thought when laying eyes on them was: Bullitt. Dunne would have paid no mind to the car if not for the covered-up faux gas cap on the rear end, which obviously means there's something to hide there.

For us, the black wheels and the ponyless, lightless grille have us all but certain that this is indeed the Bullitt. Take those two elements, replace the photo car's finish with Highland Green, and friends, you have the modern iteration of Frank Bullitt's trusted steed. Kudos to Ford for being clever. By not overly disguising it and using the red paint as... well... a red herring, the car hides in plain sight unless you know what to look for.

remove the faux cap! don't tape over it, because tape looks ghetto.

Nope. Not according to Autoblog. It's something else. Boss 302 maybe?

Why not?

If it's a test mule, they're not going to put the big bold BOSS stripes on it, especially if they're covering up the read badge. Engine wise, it'll probably fit without any hood mods.

As I posted in the first message,

"We just spoke to someone in the know, who has seen the Bullitt and claims to be familiar with the car pictured. OK... I am going to play the heretic again...

This car in the Autoblog pix doesn't pass the "So What" test.

It's a GT with a spoiler delete and a fog light delete. B.F.D.

Unless there is a 302 (or some other hp enhancement BEYOND a CAI) under the hood I would NOT be interested, whether it be red, green, pink, whatever.

I think that there are many TMS cars out there that look WAYYY better than this thing.

I doubt its a Bullitt. Its in torch red, which we know the Bullitt will not come in and the interior is tan. Even if they were hiding the Bullitt is red for testing, I would assume the interior would still be in black, as that`s what the Bullitt will most likely come in.

The GT fender emblems are confusing. No SE so far has kept them, which leads me to believe it might be just a "dealer special".

If it's a mule who cares what it looks like....
That's the point.

We can guess all we want.
It could have been a Bullitt mule or maybe something else.
Unless someone knows whats under the hood, you can speculate until you're all blue in the face

The 2001 Bullitt did keep the 'GT' fender emblems.

I meant on the S197. I should have been more specific.

Or it could just be a "boys in the back room" project.

Maybe it's a Torch Red GT with black 18" bullitts, a no fog grille, and electrical tape on the rear medallion.

We’re not certain, but the paint job has a different look—that color is not the standard red.
NOT TORCH RED
