New car fluid change

I plan on changing the oil at 500 miles. What other fluids should I also be changing then?

no need to change any fluids at 500 miles. I would do my first engine oil change around 2000 miles after that mobil one every 6 to 8000 miles. No other fluids need to be changed for a long time

I changed my oil at 2000 mi. Personally I saw nothing in the oil, maybe there were particles in the filter. There is no reason to change it even that early unless you don't put a lot of miles on the car (me) or you race it.
The oil companies aren't going to ask you not to.

I've read and been told by others smarter than me to change the oil & other fluids at about 500 miles specifically due to small metal filings that are found in the oil during engine break-in. Same for transmission fluid. Now I'm confused.

Here's another question: Is it wise to use real dinosaur oil with the first oil change and then synthetic thereafter?

I changed mine at 600 miles...just an old habit...new engine and possible metal shavings...I will now do it every 3,000 miles (do that for all my cars except the Vette which I change yearly ...Mobil One Synthetic and I only put about 3,200 miles on that car in a year)...it's cheap insurance.

BTW, I'm sticking with the Motorcraft 5w-20 Semi-Synthetic (Factory Fill) and the 820S Motorcraft Filter...I used the 5w-20 oil in my '02 Stang V6 and it ran like a champ...put 65K miles on her and I ran her pretty hard...but always changed the oil @ 3K miles instead of the recommended 5K miles...
Do what you feel comfortable with....

I've been told by a guy who works on cars and considers himself to be a "Ford Man", that he would definately change the oil at 500 miles the first time. I have not heard anyone mention anything about the transmission fluid.

Going totally synthetic is cheap insurance. The spec on the Mustang is to use a synthetic blend.

Thanks for the info. I plan on changing it at 500 miles especially since it will be sitting over the winter.

Dealer uses Motorcraft synthetic. Was going to use Mobil 1, so I'll have to decide in a week what I will use.

Is there a thread about what oil to use similar to the "Meguiars v. Zaino" thread?

There was one started by Steevr a while back. Went on for four or more pages. Check for his oil thread.

In my opinion, if you are going to change your oil this early, I would use regular dino oil for this oil change, then synthetic after that. I've read in a few different places that using a synthetic too soon can have a negative affect on the breakin of your engine.... Of course I'm not an oil expert, and just read that on the internet, so take it for what its worth.
