Need help when looking at a new turbocharged car
Need help when looking at a new turbocharged car
I have been lurking on carmax and all the local indianapolis area car dealers for some time now, searching for either a gently used gt500, or a roush or Saleen mustang (my 06 GT has 75k miles and I'm getting the new car itch
). I was recently approved for a 2013 GT, but even with a 5.9% interest rate through Ford financing, paying $700+ a month was not something I want to do (Seems like all the 13 GT's are right at 40k around here, is it the same everywhere else??). Anyways, today I found a REALLY nice 07 GT that has had the gt500 conversion and has a TURBONETICS turbo on it (car has less than 10K miles on it). I have never owned a turbo or supercharged car and do not really know what to ask or look for to ensure the car was modified correctly. Does anyone have any pointers as to what type of questions I need to ask other than the obvious. Was it installed professionally, how many pounds of boost, is it intercooled (I don't think all turbo cars are necessarily intercooled are they?)? Here is a link to the car if anyone wants to see it:

If I were to get the car, I plan to get them to pay for some type of warranty to cover it throughout the time it is financed or I will walk away. I will also take all the snake emblems off.
TIA

I would ask right off if the Internals were replaced with Forged Parts. Runnin boost on stock pistons, heads and Crank is a recipie for disaster. Especially if it's runnin over 8 pounds of boost. (or is that 5 lbs) But that's just MY opinion.

maybe the folks at Turbonetics would give you some pointers if you give them a call?
I think you will need to talk to the prior owner to get any meaningful information. The dealer probably does not know and/or will lie to placate you so you will buy the car . . . I think I would insist that I MUST talk to the prior owner, or forget it.
Warranty is probably a good idea but make sure it is very clear about the modifications that have been done to the car -- usually the warranties have a "no modifications" out clause that will void the warranty the second you leave the dealer's parking lot.
They say it is over 500 HP . . . so that means the internals probably should be upgraded / forged . . . and the dealer probably has no clue about that, hence the need to talk to the prior owner . . . plus the prior owner has no skin in the game at this point, no incentive to lie to you.
I bet you can get the price down quite a bit; the market for heavily modified stangs is very limited; price should be comparable to the same car with no mods
