NEED HELP - About to order a 2007 Convertible
I'm new to all of this, so please bear with me. I'm the proud dad of twin girls (age 12). I am just about to place an order for a 2007 GT convertible, and I need some advice / thoughts. The car will be a family summer car, and one that will play a role in their memories. Later they may drive it to high school. Thanks in advance for your help.
Went back to the dealer today, and here's how its shaping up.

Clearcoat Black
Red Interior (see below)
5 spd. manual
Interior Upgrade Package
Premium Trim Package (new)
Comfort Group (6-way passenger seat, heated seats & compass)
Anti-Theft System
Front Seat Airbags
Boot
18" Polished Aluminum Wheels
Shaker 1000
Sattelite Radio Feature
3:55 Rear End
Wheel Locks
Spoiler Delete
Charcoal Dash Panel
Salesman is a nice guy (young man). It would be better if he knew more about the vehicle particularly the 2007 changes. Here are my questions.
1. I grilled him today on delivery. It's a high volume dealer, and he's confident that I'll have the car in August. He also tells me that he cannot modify a dealer convertible order already in the factory to make it my car. Does this sound accurate? Basically I am going to order the vehicle largely to get heated seats. I can live with August, I just don't want to be complaining in September or October.
2. He tells me that the red interior with the Premium Trim Package (padded dash & armrests) means that the car will have red seat inserts, and not an entire red seat. Does this sound right? He says the new chamois color would be the same, and it's cool but I think red will make it more of a muscle car. The photo on this site of the chamois interior shows the entire seat in chamois as well as the door panel insert. The salesman is checking, and I really don't know.
3. I can come pretty close to this car in an 2006 off the lot with the exception of heated seats which are new for 2007. I'm going to keep the car for a long time. Am I correct in thinking that it will be worth forgoing a summer's fun for heated seats later. Sure welcome any feedback on this from owners in a similiar climate. I'm in the Midwest. I just found out from this forum that they will turn off automatically after 10 minutes, which I'm not thrilled about.
I'll have Mobil 1 and a Hurst shifter in it within a couple of days of delivery, and it's done. Am I missing anything?
Sure appreciate any input. Thank You.

Your car is very close to my '06. I can't comment on the heated seats, since I'm in the mellow mid-atlantic area. It's top down time here from March (off and on) until December (off and on). At least I think it is. My bride thinks I am a little crazy. But that's what the heater is for on the edges of the convertible "season".
Even if the salesman is right about the red seat "inserts", I don't think that would be a bad look at all. Like you, I prefer the red over the chamois. And one day in re-sale land (the day will come, after all) black and red are easy to move.
To the best of my knowledge, changes are possible to an existing dealer order. But it is usually only done for a very unusual situation, like a delivered vehicle getting accidentally trashed, and the dealership stroking hard to get a replacement. It also depends on where the "replacement" vehicle is in the production pipeline.
I missed a summer on mine, but it's OK now that I have it. That would be one less summer your daughters would have to lust for the opportunity to drive it!
If the compass is in the rear view mirror, that is an upgrade I added later. The mirror is heavier than the standard rear view mirror. If your roads are seriously wasted by winter, with lots of potholes and patches, this mirror may get a little loosy-goosy on you now and then. We just drove New England roads for a week vacation, and those beasts shook the mirror loose. Not at the mounting point on the glass, just the articulated arm. Probably just need to re-tighten a set screw.
And welcome to the forums, brother. You have picked the right site to hook up with friendly Mustang enthusiasts!

Welcome to the Forum.
I have an 06 vert White with red interior and regularly drive with my 12 and 14 year old sons in the back. Its a little tight until you get in the seat then its okay. But I wouldn't recommend any long trips with the kids in the back. All my boys care about though is the roar of the engine and the rush of T.D.M. (Top Down Motoring) Here on the Jersey Shore that goes from late March until late November, with the heat on of course.
As for your questions:
1) Why take a "Dealer ordered car" you should be able to order your car the way you want it an depending upon the dealers allocation get it in 6 - 10 weeks.
2) I am fairly certain your red seats will be entirely red just as they were in 05 and 06. Only the GT 500 will have the inserts.
3) If you really want the car for this summer you can always add the heated seats. Several members of the forum have already done it to their 05's and 06's.
My most important advice is to stop wasting your time with your local dealer. Contact Ed Miller from Reynolds Ford in Illinois at ISellFord@aol.com He is a frequent contributor to the Forum. He can order anything you want and have it drop shipped to a dealer near you. Ed is a professional car salesman not a young man working part time, he knows as much about our stangs as anybody, won't play the salesman's BS game, will answer any stupid questions you have (I had many), gives as good if not better deals than anybody, has a large allocation, and most importantly makes the entire buying experience much more enjoyable.
I have absolutely no relationship to Ed other than I found him here on the forum and when my dealer told me it would be almost a year until I got my car Ed got it ordered and scheduled to be built in days and delivered to me in a few weeks. I can't say enough good things about him. many other members of the forum have had similar experiences as well.
Good Luck
Neil

I too struggled with the heated seats issue. I live in Maine and it gets cold here. But then I decided I didnt need them, seeing as I wasnt going to drive the car in the winter. If I wanted them so bad I could add them as someone else mentioned. get what makes you happy is the most important thing. The car is awesome and you will enjoy every second you are in it.
Screw the part time sales guy you are dealing with and contact Ed, as previously stated. Deal with someone as passionate about the car as you are. Dont waste your time with meatheads.

Now up here heated seats are a big plus but looking around the seat kits are only $100-120US per seat from the same guys who make heated seat kits for Ford and Chrysler as it is. You can do the install yourself or have a local upholstery shop do it (what I'll do). It'll probably cost you another say $400-600 depending on install cost.
My reasoning is that with a relatively small spring/summer/fall window here I'd rather get the summer to enjoy my ride, than getting an 07 in early/mid Oct. just to have heated seats.
My dealer is a high volume dealer too and they said realistically late sept. early oct. for delivery. Keep in mind this is in Western Canada so the delivery time would likely be a bit farther out for transit time compared to most anywhere in the US.
Walt,
I too waited for '07 to order a convertible, but one of my main reasons is not on your list: for 2007, you can get a cloth convertible top like the one on the GT500.
Although this is my first convertible, everyone I've talked to (and many on this forum) say this is a must-order. Only $200, which is less than I was expecting.
So my order is:
'07 GT Deluxe Convertible
Torch Red/Parchment leather
Black cloth top
Interior upgrade package
Heated seats
Anti-theft
Side airbags
3.55:1 rear axle
Convertible boot cover
Your kids will love it - here's the photo from my carseat fit test:

Hello and welcome! I have an '05 vert currently, and an '07 on order. I have 3 kids- 12, 9 and 3. The back seat leg room in all Mustangs is lousy, the side-to-side room in verts is even worse because of the top well (no arm rests on the sides, the panels are vertical). But my kids really love the car, especially when I drop them off at school, they're heroes for pulling up in a Mustang
==Am I correct in thinking that it will be worth forgoing a summer's fun for heated seats later. ==
There have been quite a few days that I've driven with the top down and wish I had heated seats because there's just enough chill driving on the freeway to be a little uncomfortable (and I'm in Texas). I did order the heated seats on my '07.

No one is 100% sure on the seats yet (two-tone versus solid color). We probably won't know for sure until people start receiving their '07's and posting photos. I've got the KR interior (red/black) ordered along with the IUP and premier trim group like you, so I guess we'll know for sure when they arrive
