This is what happens when you brake before a curve and your tires touches a bit of gravel ... it's like ice

I HATE ABS :bang:

[attachmentid=35839][attachmentid=35840][attachmentid=35838]

I hit a lamppost (it fell) and ended up in a ditch. No injuries, just my pride. Notice the wheel is slammed against the fender. BTW those pictures were taken the next day ... it wasn't raining at the time of the accident.

I'm now driving a POS Chrysler Neon rental.

that's not cool. Was there a passenger with you? just guessing by the passenger side airbag.

I'm sorry for you, but they'll fix it up as good as new.

Yup, your suspension's shot.

Did the wreck rip your fender clean off like that, or did you cut it the rest of the way off?

Sorry 'bout your car bro.

oh man that sucks. However, when you hit gravel I have a feeling that would have happened even if you didn't have ABS.

Well that sucks, but what does ABS have to do with it? The whole point of ABS is to help maintain control and prevent a tire from locking up and thus lossing it's ability to turn the car. For example, when you drive into gravel.

Sorry, but if you didn't have ABS, you would have been much worse off. Just sounds to me like you where going to fast. I wish people understood ABS. :bang:

yeah the worst thing you can do is lock up your brakes while you are outta control sliding....plus on gravel. has nothing to do with ABS

The damage to the actual structure of the upper front end is a concern. That may jack up the repair cost.

Yes, there was a passenger with me hence the airbag that was deployed. I guess they really do deploy. I also felt the seatbelt tensioners kick in also.

There wasn't a lot of gravel, just enough for the ABS to go crazy on me. I was breaking in a straight line so the ABS would have not really help me keep control. I has been proven that ABS do not shorten your braking distance in 2 conditions:

- On ice
- On gravel.

I have good experience with cars on tracks and let me tell you, if ABS had not kicked in, I would have stoped before the post or at least greatly reduced the speed before I hit it.

The suspension and direction took the biggest blow and yes the fender was torned right off !

BTW, on a good note, I can tell you that the Active Anti-theft does kick in when the car is towed (when it is lifted)

ABS's main function is to allow an unskilled driver more steering control during what would otherwise be an uncontrollable skid.
It's helped me before, but more often than not it's made my situation worse as well.

So which one was it? I don't understand how you could be going through a curve yet braking in a straight line

I guess I should have said: "I ran out of straight before the curve"

Regardless of what the circumstances were, ABS can indeed be fooled by certain conditions. I've experienced it myself on several occasions, mainly ice, but also dry, dusty roads. Any condition in which the tire can lose traction with little or no resistance will screw up the ABS computer.

I think I understand chads situation now...he wanted to do the slowing down on HIS terms not the ABS's, it loks like he is a competant track runner, but sometimes its just your day to hit the wall or go off roading

sorry to see you car look like that!,,speedy repairs!

You can arm the system that monitors the doors, hood and trunk without arming the inclination or motion sensors. The instructions are in the manual.

I believe you lock it with the key in the door.

Side bags should only deploy on a strong T-Bone... ie, you head should jerk towards the side window rather than towards the windshield. If your head didn't hit the window, they shouldn't have gone off.

Sorry to see your 'Stang in such a sorry state. At least you walked away to tell about it!

ABS sure can make matters worse. That's one reason I chose one without it. I've always had problems with it on Ford products, generally with it engaging at times I felt were questionable. The way I look at it is this, there's one less electronic component to worry about down the road. Good luck getting yours fixed. You'll be back in the saddle again before you know it.
