If someone does that to me, AND I am 100% sure of the car; then I will kick in their door and leave a note of "thanks for denting my car, now I dented yours". People have zero respect for other peoples property. So I'll return the "favor" they did to my car 100 fold. Maybe that will teach them to be more careful in the future.
You'll now have to consider where, how, and what side to park.
For instance, like most replies said, park away from the masses and shopping carts.
When I must park in a diagonal spot, point the nose closer to the left (cant the car within the 2 lines), thus giving the car on the right more room when he/she opens the their door.
If I have a choice (especially at work), I always look for an 'end' spot, especially an empty stall to the right of an already parked car. Most people drive alone, so no one will open the passenger door.
Will these tips guarentee a ding free door? No, but they'll decrease your chances significantly.

Sometimes even that doesn't help. I parked my freshly restored '87 GT WAY OUT in the parking lot at Lowes one day. Keep in mind I live in north Texas, land of strong winds. I come out of the store to find a shopping cart up against my left rear quarter panel. Yep. Big dent on the wheel lip. Why do people have to be sooooo lazy as to not walk a few feet to put their carts in the corrals? Grrrr! :bang:

I have these fake parking tickets I leave on people's car all the time when they park too close to me. It's hillarious

I need to get some of those! I hate when I park in BFE and you still get a jerk that parks next to you. So far, though...no dings... (knocks on wood)

Some people.
well at least you did not have someone rub your rear bumper and take six inches of paint off, like I had done the first month I had mine. NO NOTE! NO I'M SORRY! Had to have it resprayed!
I'd do that if I knew for sure it was the car that did it. Several cars could cycle through that spot before you come back and retaliate.
I once parked in a lot near the back. No one around and a million spots open next to the stores. i come back some jerk parks right next to me. I guess he figured he wouldnt get a ding from my new car and ding his old piece of s**t.

No door dings on my car after a little over 13 months (picked the car up 12/28/04).
When I drive into a parking lot I start looking for spaces where I can park over the line so that if another car took the space next to my car the driver has plenty of room to swing their door open and not hit my car...or I'll park away from all the other cars in the lot.

What I worry about is the greezy little kids that really dont know what they are doing and get their paws all over the car, then slam the SUV doors into the side of my car when they pile in after getting an eyefull. Not that this happened, but I've seen it come close so many times. But i've found the sure-fire way of avoiding getting dings. The car never leaves the garage. Just so you all know I DO PARK FAR AWAY some time I park near the concrete dividers and take up 2 spots! On this particular ocassion I was running into Radio Shack its in a little strip and my only option was to park next to cars! And get this I parked next to a 2001 red mustang v6. It had to have been him who dinged it cause when i came out the spot was empty and my door was dinged and i had only been in there like 10 minutes at most.
Sometimes taking up 2 parking spots does more harm than good.
I was trying to find a parking spot one friday night and at least 3 or 4 spots were taken by people double-parking their cars. Otherwise the lot was full. Lucky for them I wouldn't do something like that, but I wouldn't be surpised if their cars were dinged/keyed on purpose
