Mustangs on the Lot
#1
I went to Sacramento for business this week and my hotel was right across the street from a Ford dealership that had thirteen 2005/2006 Mustangs on the lot - all available for sale. They were asking MSRP. Two of them were GT's (one was a vert with a stick and the other a coup with an automatic).
As I travelled around I saw other dealerships with mustangs on the lot. When I got home I stopped by the dealership where I bought my wife's car and they had four available - and at least one was a GT.
Wow...how things have changed since June, July, and August. I ordered my wife her car a month before her birthday at the beginning of May and we got it in August. When I informed my wife she had a Mustang on the way - we had to drive 50 miles to find a dealer that had one she could look at (the buyer was supposed to pick it up that day).
One salesman said this has been a fairly recent turn. He attributed it to Katrina - a lack of confidence in the economy - whatever. But it's just weird to see these beautiful cars on car lots.

I too am seeing the same thing here in Michigan.
I am on the road for a living and I pass a lot of dealerships.
I'm seeing some, I wouldn't say a lot, but as you said a lot more than recent months.

I'm not surprised.
For the last 3 months, Mustang sales have NOT been very good.
July 10,577
August 10,921
September 10,976
That's only an annual sales rate of 131,000, no better than the old Mustang.
Since Ford is building ~200,000 Mustangs / year, simple arithmetic tell us that there are going to be LOTS of 06 Mustangs sitting on dealer lots.
Dealer price gouging has slowed down Mustang sales, just like the dealers killed 2 seat T-Bird sales.
Most of the dealers around me have 05 & 06 V6s stacked up on their lots like fire wood before winter. They have far too many V6 verts in stock. GTs are still pretty scarce.
So will Ford put incentives on the Mustang? Not likely in my book as long as dealers are tying to charge MSRP or OVER MSRP.
I'd guess that the first thing that happens is overtime is cut at AAI so fewer are built.

Finally, the pendulum is swinging toward the supply side (supply is catching up to demand).
Took longer than I thought but, I don't think it will be too much longer before we start seeing incentives on Mustangs, even the GT.

Probably a few reasons:
-most people who wanted an 05 bought it prior to the summer
-gas prices are higher making it harder to afford
-not as many buy a sports car mid-summer going into fall-winter...
Sales should increase again for the spring

Both large Ford dealerships here - Raleigh NC (Capitial Ford and Crossroads Ford) each have 35 plus Mustangs - mixture of 05/06s. Still a lot of verts. Capitial ford even has an 06 Tungstun (sp?) with 995 on the used car lot - along with a used 05 GT WV blue.

Would that be just before, or after the rebates?

Well, no abundance of Mustangs here in Minnesota. Still asking premium pricing. A used 05 GT convertible with 10,000 miles on it is currently at the dealership. Asking price, $1,000 over original invoice. Why would the dealership put the original sticker back in the window showing that the price on a used vehicle is more than MSRP, new?

Just got the Suday paper (L.A. Times) with all the current dealer ads.
Apparently Vista Ford in Woodland Hills, CA has 7 2005 GT's offered for $26,495, a discount of 2,365 from $28,860 (MSRP).
Number is (800) 781-0920 if anybody is interested.

well here in Va Kip Killoman ford has had a used 05 yellow GT on the lot since August. It started at 35,500, went to 33,000 and now is at 27,000. Still more than I am paying for my loaded 06 GT, so every few weeks I go by and take a look. How low can we go!!! Why not just price it as a used 05 GT then trying to go higher than a new one? It looks like the buyer insanity is about over. It puts a smile on my face..........

Seeing several on the lots around here too. (Nashville, TN and West) Most are still asking MSRP but I know the ones I looked at were stickered at more than I payed for mine with the same options and I payed sticker so I guess they're making some markups on there somewhere.

110 days and waiting...
Where is that supply to meet my demand?
I had this thought back in June when I ordered that I might be able to get some driving days in before it snows. Seems foolish now in hindsight. I did find one listed in Alabama to fit my order. Hmm, only 1100 miles away. That's just a few hundred $$ in gas and 20 hours driving it back. And a flight down. It's starting to sound tempting. I may have to call tommorrow and see if it has (422) Callifornia Emmisions on it that I need.
