before this turns in to a MADD board, let me go back to the door opener theme: if you live in a new apartment and the garage is an out building; the only way in is using the remote or key-less pad entry

Almost as stupid as someone that designs a garage where the drive through door is the only way to get in or out of it.

Oh and I have had loved ones (plural) killed by drunk drivers, but would never stoop down to that level, but that's me

Yes, but if your garage does not have another way to get into it other than the garage door, you cannot reach that release. This happens after power loss after hurricanes. People need to get to their generators, which are locked in their garage, which has no power and no other door...

Every home garage door I've seen in the last twenty years has had a cylinder lock mounted in the center of the door. When you unlock it, the lock pops out and it's attached to a cable. When the cable is pulled, the door can be operated manually.
