mustang 2005 - new model
I think that Ford has to be a little more sophisticated with its approach to
advertising of the new mustang in order to appeal not only to existing
enthusiasts but to draw in new consumers. This was the appeal of the
1964 and a half model. It appealed to young and old alike who were looking
for an affordible sports car with european appeal.
There fore they need to segment their customer base of each model and
market to them in different ways. I think what is missing is a mustang
LX model that appeals to consumers who could affort BMW or VW Passat
and some of the other intermediate priced luxury cars but do not want
to buy european.
Having said that I always like the advertising of the late 60s that emphasized
either the thoroughbred heritage -wild horsed and open spaces but also
the all american nature of the product. I would like to see a campaign that
photographed Ford automobiles out west in the National Parks.

With all due respect to the previous two messages, I think that the success of the
original 1964 and a half mustang was the broad appeal of the car to a cross section of consumers both young and old alike.
If Ford is to maximize its profit on the base Mustang, then it must offer a range of packages that appeal to different consumers. Clearly the current Mustang owners are attracted to the low price and performance positioning but i believe that Ford would be successful attracting other segments with different packages.
I think an LX or a premium package would appeal to young consumers who are looking for some of the extras that all the forum writers have added to their
wish lists.
Earlier Ford was successful selling a range of packages with the Contour and much earlier with the Mekur (sp?) from Germany.

Ford doesnt offer different Mustang packages to appeal to different generations and across the broad customer base, it offers different CARS to appeal across the customer base
my 75 year old grandmother isnt going to be driving a 2005 Mustang 'LX' because it's got the features of a Navigator, she's going to drive the Navigator, or say a Ford 500 sedan.
my 16 year old next door neighbor cant afford a 20K 2005 Mustang, even at base, but she can take a run at a 2005 Focus, or Escort (if still offered, i forget)
the Mustang was never designed to be a broad car appealing to anyone and everyone, that's why every brand makes many different MODELS, cars, trucks, SUVs, etc
an LX package or somethin offered with BMWs, Benz, etc would be for someone buying a Lincoln, or Expedition, or upper line Mercury, not a Mustang, GT or no

boy icwspiker you do not seem to be open to people with
other business ideas
The fact of the matter is that the Ford Mustang sold over
a fourth of its cars in the first 5 years of a 40 year
production run by appealing to a cross section of
consumers.
You contradict your own statement by acknowledging that
the Mustang currently has two models a base model and
a GT model --DESIGNED TO APPEAL TO DIFFERENT
CONSUMERS -- who both happen to be mustang
enthusiasts.
If Ford is to maximize the value of its production run
then it must offer a few different packages. Wait
until next year when they offer a convertible -
WHICH IN EFFECT WILL BE AN LX MODEL.
However, I believe that they could further segment their
consumer base by making a fast back model with
more extras that is designed to appeal to yet an
other segment of consumers who also -HAPPEN TO
BE MUSTANT ENTHUSIASTS. (ie not people that
want to by Navigators or F150s)
Cheers

and besides, the reason it appealed so much in the beggining is because that was before the sprint ,and MUSTANG 2 eras, the fox body has done a helluva lot to help out, but, nothing will ever rub away the wound left on the Mustang by the Mustang II
Well, back in the day, Ford did go after a more luxury-oriented buyer looking for a sporty-type car. The car was called the Mercury Cougar and it shared many parts with the Mustang. It was, however, a larger, better equipped and more expensive car.
Given the Ford is struggling with Mercury right now, I'd bet if they went after the kind of sporty, near-luxury coupe buyer you are talking about, they'd do it through some kind of Mercury -- perhaps based some of the better versions of the Mustang D2C platform (i.e with the IRS and even better interior appointments).

If you look at the price range of the mustang as it is, the car is already trying to be lots of things to lots of people
The range is from 20K to 58K in Canadian funds (monopoly money)
I think tone is right... a Mercury Cougar would be a good model for this requirement, throw in the NAV system in there as well

There's schoolgirls in the V6 Convertibles, young guys in their GTs, the host of SEs, and finally all the midlife crisis guys in their Cobras.
So to me it sounds like you wan't an iDrive, 45-way power seats and an interior that cost 20k alone. For that my friend you should buy a BMW, if the mustang gets over dressed up even in an optional package its going to alienate a large portion of core enthusiast.
Where have you been for the last two years? Every article Ford has produced talks about how they need to modernize and refine the Mustang while still remaining true to it's heritage. Almost as much as they have been talking about appealing to a wide audience.
OH an ONE more thing GOOD FRIEND. Considering it was you who suggested festooning the mustang with black bumpers and "x-type jet" or some other such nonsense, I'm confused. How exactly, would that increase it's appeal????
Do you want it to be luxurious, or hideous??????
Please explain.
As a favor.
To me.
Your friend.
Or better yet, you could not explain, yeah that would be good too.
