Locking Gas Cap?

I haven't felt that I needed a locking gas cap since the 70s, but I think it might be prudent to put one on the Mustang.

Does anyone else have one? Recommendations?

Funny you mention a locking gas cap. The wife and I were discussing just that last weekend. I look forward to any responses people have concerning this.

Funny this should come up... I was talking with my brother the cop (as I was expressing the same about Stangness) and he said this:

"Sure! Get one. That'll be great. They'll just put a few holes in the tank and drain it for ya. But they won't get in the cap!"

In other words... it's probably best to not bother, unless you want a new tank or two... $50-ish in lost gas isn't much compared to that, is it? Be better off with some sorta surveillance system, really, to catch them. Or a garage...

Pretty quickly dissuaded me, FWIW. Of course, reality is that any possible deterence is good... so the amature gas suckers would be foiled.... until they got mad...

Anyway, I'm not doin' it. :|

I installed one on my 05 before I drove it off the dealers lot. I wasn't worried as much about people stealing gas as people making additions to my fuel out of spite. If they really want it, they WILL get it, but at least it slows down the less dishonest out there.

Oh, and as for people drilling holes to get the fuel, I really don't see them doing that on a lowered Mustang. There just isn't room to get a drill under there in the first place. That is more of a problem for trucks I would think.

I don't know...IMHO, for a LEO, that doesn't sound like wonderful logic. Does he also recommend against keeping your car (or house) locked because someone will smash the window to get in? How about leaving your key in the ignition so a thief won't ruin the switch?

A locking gas cap seems to be a logical precaution to me. If you're afraid that it will cause someone to drill holes in your tank, I suggest you don't install one. But my guess is that someone holding a siphoning hose and empty container would move on to the next car without a locking cap first. It's probably more challenging to steal gas while it's pouring out of the bottom of a car.

I checked with my local Ford dealer a couple weeks ago and there is no Ford locking gas cap part # for our s197's. I would like to know which cap would work. I find it odd that they have a PN for the wife's Edge but not the Stang that's been out for two years longer.

I've been looking at the Moss options too. Part #'s 055-953,954 & 955 as well as 057-265.

As far as the "poking a hole in the tank" is concerned, this is an era where folks are crawling under vehicles and hacksawing cats off the exhaust to sell to scrap metal dealers.

But if they do either of these under a Mustang, they'll have to be very skinny and they'll still have to work hard for it.

I'm looking for just a locking cap - not the lid.

Seems they've got one of those too...337-900

Sound less like an installation for peace of mind and more an installation for personal hassle. You're going to have to deal with that cap every...single...time...you...fuel...up. A gas thief isn't going to waste time monkeying with the gas cap.

Besides...once they have all the gas, they have to run away with it. :P

I did it for peace of mind. Not so much worried about gas going out. It's foreign substances coming in that worried me at the time (No garage for my mustang ).

I went with a motorcraft part. Just like ARBO, the dealership told me they didn't have one for the s197 mustangs. Gave them the part number and discussed price matching and that was that. The part number is: 6L3Z-9030-A. Looking at my receipt is says something about the part number being replaced with 6L3Z-9030-AA Well, one of them should work

Filling up can be tedious, but I don't fill up often enough to drive me insane. Like I said, more for peace of mind than anything.

Just curious why you think so. It doesn't seem like it would be a big deal to unlock and remove the cap.

The first thing I did over two years ago was order a Stant locking gas cap. It's worked great ever since and I wouldn't be without it. Here's where I got mine at an excellent price.

Just lazy It's just having to take an extra step you didn't need to before. Really, not bad at all.

Gotta disagree with the copper. A locking gas cap is a great idea. Particularly if you live in an apartment or townhome complex with a common parking lot. Most of the gas siphoning thefts that are occurring in my area are happening in apartment complexes after dark. As for drilling, a hose is a lot lighter and easier for a perp to carry than a drill.

That I could probably see.

One method involves a key. The other method doesn't.

Doesn't seem like a big difference, but that's one less key and one less operation to deal with.

Several months ago I ordered one of these. I was extremely pleased with the part and the seller's response. I accidentally ordered the 99-04 version and, of course, it didn't fit! So I emailed the guy explaining my dilemma and he immediately sent me the correct cap and a self-mailer to return the incorrect cap. Talk about above and beyond!
