Length of time from order to delivery?

I was wondering if I can get some info about how long it takes from writing the order to delivery of a new Mustang (the GT, if that matters.) The reason we're ordering is that we are using X-plan and the dealer prefers to order X-plan cars as opposed to selling off the lot, particularly 5-speed GT's. On top of that, I do have a few options that I want along with a particular color, so ordering looks like the better route to go anyways.

My wife and I are looking to take delivery in late October and we were told by our local dealer that 6-8 weeks is what we should expect for that timeline. As a result, we are planning to order in late August. But I was wondering what you folks, especially any Ford dealers, think about that 6-8 week estimate.

As always, thank you for your time and responses.

I'm not sure, but I've heard some people mention the 6 month number. Not sure though.

Mine was not X-plan.

Ordered mid-June 2005. '06's started building August 5, 2005. Took delivery September 7, 2005.

Find out what priority they give your x-plan order. If you do not get a high priority (numerically low, preferrably between 10-15) I would question the 6-8 week delivery unless they are a high volume dealership.

Ask for a 10 or 11 priority and check down the line. The priority # can be changed after the fact. Once your car is serialized, the priority # will no longer matter. But a low priority # helps get you serialized sooner.

Same, but mine also had a 2 week stay on a defective railcar
My friend's wait time was about 8 weeks too.

I was told 8 weeks by my dealer for my recent order. I got an order priority code of 10 but they are a smallish dealer that does big volume on trucks but probably low volume on Mustangs so we'll see. I would say that 6 weeks would be the quickest to expect based on what I have seen from other folks delivery times of 2007 models.

Depending on the volume of your dealer, it might play a role. Because I was ordering X plan from one of the few dealers and who had a low allocation, it took months for my order to even be serialized...so long that my '06 order changed to an '07...Make sure that your dealer has set your correct expectations about his volume and how soon you will be his highest priority order. If your order is a priority 10 and your dealer also has a priority 10 behind you which is not a GT and not a manual, guess who's getting built first if he's already built 4 GTs this month? Not yours..

I've seen them take 4 weeks and I've seen them take 4 months like mine...

My local dealers said 3 months to be on the safe side... but they've ranged from 6 weeks to 4 months. The manual trans GT takes the longest according to them.

It definitely varies per dealer. I order my car the same day as Cheese, and my build date is scheduled for the week of 8-7.

I also think options have something to do with how soon you get it. It seems if you order a auto GT with few options, you will get it quicker than a manual GT with all options.

More parts = more time.

It all goes down to allocation...Ford only wants a certain mix of manuals and a certain mix of GTs and a certain mix of the 18" Polished. Order all three and you are waiting...

I agree that it depends on the dealer. On the day I ordered my 05 one dealer told me 'Ford is backed up on Mustang orders so if you order now you're not going to see it for a year'.
Called another dealer and told him what the 1st one told me about the year wait for an ordered car, he put me on hold, came back and told me 'order today and it'll be here in 6 weeks (turned into almost 9 weeks) so I placed the order over the phone.
Regarding allocation/priority numbers...my dealer accepted my order as X-Plan and my paperwork showed priority-20 (I went in and got my DORA and gave them a small deposit about 2 weeks after I ordered when they got the VIN for the car) and when I asked about the high priority number he said 'doesn't matter as the car was being built as of 10/28'...8 days after ordering...when in reality the car was on a delay in production.
I still got the car in a little over 2 months at a great price.
It was worth it to me to wait for the car and avoid the ADM's of $5,000 on average that dealers were charging for cars in stock.
(order details in my signature)

My car took exactly 33 days from order to delivery. My dealer had me as a priority 10 from the start and they have high allocation. The dealer said that was the shortest time they had ever had from order to delivery.
