Slippery slope. Pay attention to past events. It's not unheard of.

Moo

Only if you believe any rule, regulation or arbitrary law should simply be followed no matter how asinine or even unconstitutional it may be...

You only have the rights you know you have, think about it. Questioning authority is certainly NOT anarchy.

You sound like you think everyone should just blindly do as they are told, no questions asked. I for one DO NOT.

Besides, there are many traffic laws in place that serve no other purpose than revenue generation.

I agree, it is a taking responsibility thing. If you choose to do something stupid, take responsibility for it. Everyone seems to want to blame someone else. I find this to be a theme in most of these forums. Breaking laws is breaking laws. If someone was to steal your car, because he wanted to, you wouldn't think that that would be his right, would you? I have done stupid things over the years, sometimes I get caught, but I chose to do them. I am constantly amazed how when someone is caught redhanded, they can claim that they are not guilty. Everyone wants to sue when they are wronged, but don't you dare accuse me when I choose to do something wrong, or illegal.

Good post Black GT. I agree with what you wrote. Unfortunately I think our country is heading in the direction of a police state. Welcome to the land of the free to do as your told, and the home of the brave new world.

You dug up a thread that's almost a year old for that post?

Yeah, there's a fine line between being a good noob for searching, and a bad noob for bringing up dead threads.

I am thinking about switching to Progressive and they want me to stick a black box on the OBD-II port for each car I have. Good idea or bad idea? I'll save a lot on my insurance if I go with the black box.

There's two things I wouldn't do. 1) have insurance with Progressive, and 2) put another monitoring device on my car.

I know others have said it can potentially be used to your benefit, but IMO more than likely it will end up being used as ammunition against you.

Wrong and wrong.

Wrong again. Little legislation, and no court order "required." MAybe if you hire a good attorney he wouldn't let the info be divulged in the absence of a court order, but that is not the same thing.

Heck, even in the never-ending training has it even come up. No big deal to me. Driving a Torch Red Mustang GT w/ 300+ h.p.'s - I want it there. I'm already a target. Having the impartial witness may save me in certain situations.
No one asks insurance or body shops to retrieve this info. Accident reconstructionists typically are hred to get the info. Doing so also requires special equipment and software.

Its been in most GM cars since ~95. Its been in most all cars since ~ 2000 or 2001.

Oh my God, you seriously have to ask??! While the transmitter is being placed in your car, would you spit in this cup, pee in this bottle and insert this tiny and imperceptible chip under the skin of your neck...?

Seriously, while I cannot stand the thought of these things being used against anyone, they are at present very rarely used and when used they are really only used when there is a very serious accident and the persons involved are taking positions which give no reasonable explanation or it is clear that someone did something very wrong.

Want to know how much they can get on you out of one of these?

They typically record about 5 second of information prior to a "triggering event" which is an accident of sufficient force to trigger an airbag deployment. Teh inforamtion is used to calculate and compute the velocity changes and other physics which tell the airbag that it needs to go off in a given situation.

They can tell:

if you are on the throttle or the brake
% throttle
speed at several "second" intervals
change in velocity in a given interval
if you ever applied the brakes
if you were on the throttle or the brake at the time the airbag triggered (interval "0")

Great for you if you are hit by someone not paying attention.

Bad for you if you hit someone while not paying attention.

and holy crap is this an old thread

Well I doubt if they are gonna ask grandma to hookup all this high tech stuff to her car.
My mom has never even used a computer.
Why are they picking on you?
Why would you even continue to talk to such a company?
There are plenty of low cost companies that provide better service.

Progressive is offering the lowest cost out of all the different companies.

Sure, but where's the line between a sound economical decision and being a sellout?

I just don't know that I'm ready to 'give-up' that easy just for a rate discount.

How is Progressive otherwise? Are they a reputable insurance provider?
