What benefits do you get from the KN Air filters. I have heard them recommended, before. Do you feel additional power, or actually get better gas mileage?

I've heard rumor that monkeying with the stock cartridge filter can void warranties on late vehicles. I believe I heard they started discouraging it in the '02 or '03 time frame. Can anyone with ties directly to dealer service departments either confirm or deny this?

Its been discussed A oil based filter like K&N or similiar will not void your warranty. BUT if you put to much oil on the filter and it coats the MAF wire sensor then the MAF will not be covered under warranty since the user YOU introduced oil to a sensor that shouldn't have oil. Therefore follow the directions on your K&N and you will not over oil it.

Over oiling can be a problem, but you really have to over do it. I've run K&N filters in several vehicles and I've never had a problem.

You typically pick up 5 hp or so (at the wheels) vs a stock type filter.

I'm running a new dry cotton filter on my 93 Mustang. I highly doubt that it is superior to a K&N. I might worry about running a oil free cotton filter on my street car, but my stang sees limited street miles. I can compare my oil samples K&N vs dry cotton at my next oil change.

The Mustang owners manual describes part FA-1773. That is a Motorcraft part number. A search of the Motorcraft part numbers via their site reveals that this is a new part, so you won't be able to just cross reference it to another vehicle and get it.

Our shop cut open every brand of oil filter out there. Motocraft makes the best ones. They have twice the pleats, use better materials and have metal end caps where many have cardboard, which actually break down and can get into the oil system(fram in particular).

K&N's dont do much for power, some cars get better throttle response from them. CAI's do MUCH more then a filter swap for true performance, but you have to shop those wisely too, they are not all equal by any means. I would stick with big players like Steeda that actually have the resources to properly test and engineer parts. Many just make them so they look cool, or worked on some other car. Steeda's cai for the older 2v 4.6 na and SVTF were the best for both cars you could buy.

Tough thing about K&N Air Filters is that if you "over oil" it...you can cause problems with your MAF (and of course you're introducing oil into your intake plenum) and if you "under oil" it...then it's not going to a very good job of filtering...I'm not sure if when that time comes that you have to "oil it" that the customer is able to do it like the factory. That's the main reason I avoided ever buying one.
