Maybe I was out to lunch or something, but that window sticker on the v-6 says that the mileage is 19 city 25 highway. The highway number is significantly worse than the sn95. Wasn't it 20 and 29? Seems like quite a difference.

it's 19/28 for the manual v6 and 19/25 for the automatic. it is a little curious that the auto would be so much lower considering it has the extra gear. the difference in weight between the auto and the manual is 150 lbs...so that's part of it but the final drive on the two v6 powertrains and the gt auto is the same ratio. jackg 90seville 95k

According to the Product Guide, it's only about 50 lbs.

But the overdrive gear is 0.72:1 on the V6 manual, and 0.75:1 on the V6 auto.

It irritates me that they can't at least match the prior model's MPG. But what did I expect when ...
* The engine has gotten slightly larger and HP has increased.
* The car has gotten bigger and heavier.
* The body may not be as aerodynamic as the one it replaces.

So basically you just answered your own question. Of course gas mileage is not going to be the same when you factor in all of those changes to the previous model.

Think of it this way... Your getting a far better performing engine at the cost of a couple MPG. I'll take the superior engine and minor MPG loss any day of the week.

When your talking about power and performance 9x out of 10 your going to lose in the gas efficiency department.

The engine is much better then the clunker 3.8 and makes a lot more power, much more then the #'s say. And I'd bet big bucks the aero is MUCH better then the old car. Autos always get less mileage then manuals. If you want to get a mpg boost, supercharge it

It only bugs me because the manual gets 28 MPG, while the auto gets 25 MPG. That means a big chunk of the loss is not the other changes to the car, it's just the automatic transmission setup.

Well look at auto's mpg difference on almost all cars. Auto's tend to always get lower mpg, especially with the new gear ratio and 4.0L.

Modern automatics have been getting better and better. Some are matching manuals, and many are only a tiny bit behind. The V6 auto is 10% worse on highway mileage; that's unusual these days in passenger cars, even sports cars.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Ford try to make some improvements in this in future model years.

Don't most auto companies usually low-ball their gas milage on the sticker? If they over shoot it and the car doesn't live up to the higher MPG then Ford looks bad and gets complaints.

I wouldn't get too worked up about MPG until you have the car and see how it performs with how you drive it. I know with my Civic I can get anywhere from 24 to 34 MPG depending upon what I do in a given week.

I'm retarded as I didn't see it was automatic :bang:  I guess I was too excited at seeing a window sticker. That's good to hear that the manual is similar to the out going model. I suppose a mile or two less will make up for the loud(in a bad wa) 3.8.

NO, it is VERY important that the car companies get the HIGHEST possible EPA mileage, which is what is on the sticker. The EPA mileage on the sticker is used to calculate CAFE. If Ford doesn't meet CAFE, they can end up paying millions of $$ in fines.

The EPA mileage test is severely flawed. The test proceedure goes back to the 1970's and does not really represent how people drive cars in the year 2004. in general, your city mileage will be lower than the EPA # and your highway mileage will be higher than the sticker.

However, some manufacturs (Toyota) are now designing their cars to give great EPA #'s, but end up having far worse real world #'s. The perfect example of this is the Toyota hybrids. They have EPA highway #'s in the 50 MPG range, but in the real world, customers are getting high 30s, not much better than a little 4 cylinder econo box. The mainstream press has not yet picked up on this, or if they have, they are saying nothing because they want to belive that hybrids will solve all the world's problems.

Those numbers aren't from a car magazine, they're from the Mustang Product Information Book. Could still be wrong--I see some other specs in there I question--but it's directly from Ford, specifically about the Mustang, and recently published, so it's the best I could find to go by.
