According to the current Motor Trend, GM has dropped plans to produce the platform that would have been the new Camaro/Firebird.

That leaves the Mustang and the GTO ('scuse me, but eww!) as the only living American musclecars extant, and I think we all know who's best in that comparo....

me thinks they did not want to get embarrassed again by going head to head with the mustang, especially in design---the corvette is their horse now----for $32-$38 i can drop an S/C in coupe or vert and smoke it----me likey

I hope they're wrong cause I figure the best way to a better Stang, or any other car for that matter, is good, stiff competition. Not that Ford would get compacent and drag along a 1/4 century old chassis platform or fall back on 19th century suspension technology in lieu of good competitive market alternatives...

At least Dodge/Chrysler sounds like they may throw their hat in the ring in a couple of years with a proper pony car as opposed to the hot rod Checker Cab, errr, Charger.

The same issue of MT shows a drawing of the next GTO. It's an '05 Mustang with different end caps and B-pillars, but the rest is verrry similar....

If I were a GM executive I would put out the exact same message and not give the competition any additional lead way.

BTW, a news clip on the radio stated that last month's GM sales were one of their biggest in a few years.

I would not count them out.

yeah, you would have the biggest sale too if you gave employee pricing to the entire world------the only thing saving them short term but resale will stink---

With mustang sales as strong as they are,it would be strange for GM not to bring back the camaro/firebird...didn't think the artist versions looked half bad...

Just remember that that artist has no affiliation with Chevy/GM whatsoever.

Hmm...

I didn't realize that Motor Trend articles count as "official word" from GM.

I would have thought Lutz's comments a couple months ago (saying the same thing) would mean more (and they did... there's another thread here someplace on it).

Anyway... the PLATFORM isn't dead - Holden is still using it for their next-gen vehicles. Looks like GM just won't be putting in any modifications they need for their vehicles in the short term.

GM is pretty dumb, but not that dumb. Once their full-size SUVs and trucks are completed (early), it's only a matter of time until there's some news.

Those are also fictional. The Chevelle is a super-low volume customized GTO from Hot Rod Magazine. Doug's 'Cuda is wishful thinking. It's awesome, but sadly, probably too awesome for real production.

*drools over the chevelle and cuda* I don't care if those are fake, I'll take one.

I heard somewhere that there is "official" talk about a new Dodge Challenger? I really don't mind if GM doesn't have competition, as long as there is SOME competition coming from somewhere.

aling with the awesome 'cuda, i NEED one of those chevelles. i think a chevelle body kit, if it looked like that, for the GTO would sell well. might even bump up GTO sales

Don't count GM out. "If" the Mustang is a huge success, GM isn't going to sit around and watch someone else steal the market. You can bet they've got the design department quite busy right now.

Notice I said "if" the Mustang is a huge success. Most people think it already is, but only time will tell. I remember the Suzuki Samurai was selling for thousands over sticker for 6 months or so (hard to believe now!!!) 2 years later they couldn't give them away. It is quite common for a new model to be a roaring success the first year only to fade to obscurity a couple years later. I do hope that the Mustang sales stay at the currently strong levels and we see more retro musclecars hit the showrooms from other manufacturers, that would be a dream come true!
