MP3 Player on Amazon

Is an WMA file the same as a MP3 file? I guess a better question is, will the 05 radio play WMA files or do they have to be MP3. I am just getting into MP3s and started to rip some CDs last night. But I accidentally ripped them into WMA files instead of MP3. Do I need to start over?

 

I'm going to assume that it only plays MP3s. WMA is Windows Media Audio, a proprietary compression that is like an MP3 but only works on certain things. Let me guess, you used Windows Media Player? I bought Musicmatch Jukebox just to rip MP3s but now I use it for all my music cataloging.

i don't know if it will read wma, that is the file format for Windows Media player Audio. kinda like wmv is windows media video. anyhow...

i'd stick with mp3s...if you haven't gotten to far into ripping the cds you can start again if you want. there may be a way to convert them using soundforge or something similar.

there may be more info. in the owners manuel or the order guide saying specfically if it plays formats other than regular cds (orange book?) and mp3s.

 

i like audiograbber. it's good for ripping cds to mp3s. it does disk normalization, writes the id3 file for you using the cddb, and a bunch of other stuff. i've heard musicmatch is good also, but i haven't had much experience with it. deffinatly look at a few options. he's right...windows media player is pretty lame-o for ripping disks.

 

I will try musicmatch jukebox. Both Media player and Jukebox came with my home computer. My work computer has Media Player only, so I have gotten used to that. But I will try both to see.

Thanks for the quick replies/info. So far I only ripped about 7 discs. Not too bad to re-do.

 

What I liked about this deal was the hard drive. I wonder if the HD can be replaced with a bigger one. Like a 250GB .

most...if not all aftermarket cdr / cdrw players (CD players that play burnt cds) that have mp3 capability play wma and mp3's
i kno both of the ones i have had in my car has... i would imagine that the 05 mustangs mp3 CD player would also play WMA's

 

I might be mistaken, but doesn't the 500 and 1000 shaker radios already play mp3 files? That mp3 player on Amazon is $600, plus tax/shipping and installation. Just get the 500 shaker system in your Mustang for whatever it's going to be... my guess is $400-$500. Any other ideas for things to link from the AUX button in the Mustang?

why would you get an extrenal mp3 player when it comes with a stock in dash 6 disc mp3 changer? at 800mb per disc that is 4.8gigs of songs. an extrenal one would be a little overkill if you ask me. i am going to look into a Sirius system for the AUX instead.

 

It doesn't "come" with it. I think the ones interested in the external are ones that didn't get the 500 shaker or 1000 shaker upgrades. Yeah, but why spend $600 or more when you can save a couple hundred and get a 6-disk mp3 player in the car already with the 500 shaker system?

Call me stupid, but what is Sirius? I've heard of it, but not enough to know. Is that Satellite radio?

Umm, the price was 290, not 600. And 4.8GB doesn't hold a candle to 20GB. Guess it depends on how many MP3's you have.

or how many mp3s you're going to be listening too. cd's are cheap so burning disks isn't a biggie imo. using an ipod or something is cool, but i would rather not have extra peripherals hanging around inside the car.

besides, a 700mb disk will hold approx. 140 mp3's (@ 5mb a piece). at 5 min each that's a little over 11 hours of music per disk. some songs are longer, some shorter. this is an average i'm using on 128kbit/44hz files.

140 songs @ 5 min each = 700 minutes. /60 minues = 11.666 hours.

11.666 hours * 6 disks = almost 70 hours of music.

i know 20 gigs is more, but 70 hours is still A LOT of music.

 

Not all MP3 players play WMA files. I have a Sony MP3 player in my Jeep right now and it doesn't recognize WMA. Anyway, be on the lookout for a new device that is becoming popular. It connects to the AUX input of any deck. It allows the user to connect a USB device to it, so in other words you could plug in a 250GB external hard drive and have more music than you would know what to do with. I just can't remember the name of the manufacturer who makes the thing.

You may want to try Windows Media Player 10. It rips MP3s now and has a much better interface for just about everything.

 

The omnifi is a slick piece of equipment. I installed one a couple months back. The great part is that it has built in wireless so you can copy the files to the player from your wireless network. It also uses a variation of Linux (I believe) and the player itself can be upgraded. Another "nice touch" is the face plate. You mount everything in the trunk and it has a very thin face plate for the front. The last one I installed was put in the arm rest... very trick.

so can you use that thing in addition to a normal stereo? so mount the control in the armrest or something and still have a regular stereo for cd's and the radio?

 

Umm, somebody changed the link. When I clicked it earlier today it was $599. I don't know what's up with that... but that's what I based my statement off of.
