Insurance...please help
OK so F$%@ Geico. I'm trying to find a new insurance policy because Esurance is charging me too much and I'm getting no discount for turning 25. I had a policy made up on Geico but was curious about whether or no aftermarket parts would be covered so I called them and they asked for a list of my parts and I told them. Well the lady got back on the phone and said sorry we can't give you insurance at all even if you don't have your aftermarket parts covered under your policy and then tried to get off the phone real quick but I wanted to get come kind of explanation. They feel that anyone who adds aftermarket parts to their vehicle is doing it specifically to race and will not offer them insurance. How much $hit is that. So basically my fellow modified Mustang owners I need your help in finding a company that gives good rates to people like us. Please help.

As an aside, I wouldn't bring up the subject of mods while you're shopping for a quote. Get the policy first, then after a while ask about a rider for upgraded parts. If you come out of the gate with a list of mods they'll likely follow Geico's lead.
Sorry to hear your trouble... one thing is for certain; do not let yourself have a gap in insurance coverage. If you think your insurance is high now?! It'll be nothing compared to what you'll pay if you have a coverage gap.
Unfortunately, I can think of no mainstream insurer that will provide the kind of coverage you speak of. It makes no sense for them to cover these parts because in reality a modified car, in most cases is actually worth less (to the sales/dealer community) than an unmolested car.
Finally, GEICO and most mainstream auto insurers are in business to make money - unfortunately, there is truth in what the online-agent told you. People with modified cars are more likely to be involved in an accident. This is likely bases on statistics and raw data obtained by the insurers over decades of time.
In the end, simply because you have a modified car does not make you a bad person; it just makes you (given your age as well) not a wise bet from an insurer's perspective.
Next step, shop around, there are many auto insurers out there - just don't let them know you have "aftermarket speed parts".
Good Luck.

Do a search for this subject and you will tons of answers. I use State farm personally but I have a house covered and another vehicle so I get discounts. Everyones situation is different and location makes a difference as well.
William, we've been happy with State Farm. Knock on wood. Good rates and service. We get discounts for multiple cars, our ages, good driver, etc. And also we've recently received two "dividend" checks for $40 each. One check for each vehicle. My understanding is that we received the dividends because State Farm made a profit. I don't know about how they would rate a modified Mustang. Good luck with your insurance whatever company you choose.
Just a quick note:
When I got my Mustang I was 33 yrs old, living in Brooklyn,NY and paying State Farms just under $3K for full coverage for a year (Geico wanted over $5K for the year even with my clean record). Now I'm in NJ with my girl and we're paying a little over $4K but that's with 4 cars between us with full coverage on all with Geico: 99 Firebird, 04 RX-8, 05 Mustang GT & 06 Xa. The Xa even costs the most cause it's my commuter car.
My own car was purchased BEFORE I modded it, which is probably the only reason I still have insurance (and I work for the company!). I took out a rider to cover my mods (specifically my Saleen HIDs, headlights are easily destroyed) and they told me that even paying the additional premium I can't get more than 10% of the Actual Cash Value of the car toward replacing my mods if the car is stolen or destroyed.
Fortunately, a lot of my stuff (NAV, side scoops, Fanblades, GT500 spoiler) is OEM Ford, I can at least TRY to argue that it came with the car and it wasn't a mod...
For example, if I get a supercharger though I am on my own, since there won't be enough insurance to cover its replacement.
So good luck! Be aware about what is out there. Maybe e-surance isn't such a bad deal after all.
It's looking that way. Anyone know anything about encompass?
I've got liberty Mutual. Great service. I can add/subtract cars or coverages right on the phone etc. I go with $1,000 deductables to keep the premium down. My stang runs me about 1400 a year, and I carry more than the minimums. Course, I'm an old fart, (47). Had Farmers, but they jacked me around and got so pricey because of my daughter, I left them after almost 20 years with the same agent. As far as your mods go....what they said. Good luck, just never, and I mean never drive without it.
State Farm here, had the Lightning since 1999 and hit 3-4 deer and never an actual wreck. They covered everything and I only seen maybe a slight hike in rate but in 2006 I was in a minor rearend chain reaction and the forgave the claim, ate my $500 deductible and never said a word about the Harley parts or anything. The Mustang is also with the same agent and she knows I build my cars, appearance and peformance and all I have ever been told is keep all my records and money spent.
Farmers for 25 years, accident and ticket free, and I am very satisfied with the service I have received. I am 62 and have all the discounts; however, my policy reads " High Performance Surcharge has been applied." Before you sign a contract, ask if the company has this type of surcharge.
Because of the winter weather here, I am going to change my policy this winter, to " Pleasure Use only-less then 5000 miles a year", and that should help lower the policy cost. If you do not have a daily driver this may be something else to check on.
One last thing, I have also been told, insurance company's are using your credit score to determine your rate(s), if you have not done so in a while, you may want to pull a credit report and see what your score is or ask prospective insurers if they are using this score to rate you. Hope this helps.

I have Erie, and love them. I'm 30, not married, no kids, and pay $780 a year for full+ coverage. It is a "pleaure vehcle" which means I have a limit on mileage per year (its 8,500 which is fine, I have the Escape), and it also helps to have your homeowners policy with them as well, plus my sister and husband use them, my parents auto and home are with them too (they give great joint discounts to their polcy holders). You may be able to find something decent, but will just have to search around alot. Just keep the mod question out of the conversation for a while.

I couldn't agree more. I've been with State Farm for about 3 years now and I'm very happy. I just renewed my policy this month and found my rates had went down by about $70.00 from where they were 6 months earlier and that dividend check was sweet! Naturally I used all $150 of it for mods for the Mustang. Speaking of mods for the Mustang, my agency is very friendly when it comes to modifications. I asked them about this when my car was wrecked in the deer incident and that I was going to put aftermarket parts on the car. They just told me to keep a receipt of everything I purchased in case of an accident and I have nothing to worry about. No additional insurance to purchase, no catchy clauses. My only real gripe with them was when I had my unfortunate meeting with the deer, they wanted to put used parts on what was essentially a new Mustang and that just didn't agree with me, especially when I had just bumped up the coverage I had with them. But other than that, they are the best company I've been with thus far.
