I haven't had a ticket for speeding in over 7 years, but I've been driving a Plymouth Breeze. I have had a Mustang in the past, and I do know they are unfairly targeted by the powers that be. I'm older now, but in case I do get a bit carried away at some point while having this car, I'd like the protection of a good radar detector. Insurance is high enough, even at my age and with a perfect record over the past 7 years. I've heard laser detectors work, but by the time they go off, it's too late. Anyone have any suggestions on the most up to date detector and if it's worth the money?

Crazy suggestion but....if you stop speeding and obey the law, wouldn't that be the best way to avoid a ticket?

Anything made by COBRA Electronics, they have been the brand of radar detectors I've always trusted, I tried to look up the model number I have in my mustang, but its not listed, the detector is only 7 months old and it works great, no tickets here! they have a few new one's on the website, check them out and they are def worth the money, Cobra!

You know something? I do obey the law. I've had a perfect record for several years. I just know that these cars are targeted and I just want a bit more protection, in case at times I might get lost in the excitement or a bit carried away, as we all do, I'm sure, from time to time. OK? This was an honest request from a guy who does obey the law.

It's true that for the most part a laser detector tells you that you have just been hit -- meaning it's too late to slow down now. That's why my Mustang will have one of these installed.

Yep, a laser detector will do you no good, it will go off the same time that the cop will get your speed, since laser travel at the speed of light.

Good point Jessica. I forgot the after my last post. I live in the country where it is easy to speed but I see at least 2 cops daily so even though I know to drive the speed limit I got busted last year in my Jeep going 20 over the limit (that's km, not mph).

Escort Passport 8500 X50 is in my opinion the best on the market.

If it were not for cruise control, I would have lost my license already. The GT cruises over the speed limit soooo easy - and it feels like your going slow. I've been lucky, one warning for doing 90 mph in a 65 zone. Now cruise control is my best friend. I'm pretty sure the speedometer is way off b/c when your doing 90, it really feels like 65

There's a thread floating around with the same topic from the past...but in essence, check out this link:

http://www.speedzones.com/
The “Top Dog†of radar detectors in the Over $300.00 price category goes to Escort’s X50 for the following reasons. It was the only detector to report constant on and instant on radar over the hill at the 2 1/2 mile cone. It consistently alerted to MPH’s Bee III POP mode. It was one of only two of the six detectors tested to be invisible to the new Spectre III RDD and it tied in the Long Ranger test alerting at an astounding eleven miles from the radar guns. The X50 also lends itself easily to interfacing with motorcycle defense systems with external audio. In the Under $200.00 club each competitor won something and there wasn’t a clear-cut winner as in the Over $300.00 crowd. Cobra’s 9700 was the Long Ranger champ seeing X band at 10.7 miles and K band at 8.8 miles. PNI’s Silver Bullet was the only detector in this category to be invisible to the Spectre III RDD. Whistler’s 73 displayed superior range from the 2-mile cone during the instant on and constant on radar testing. Will all of the detectors tested give you substancial protection from police radar guns? The answer is a resounding yes! Will the same detectors protect you against laser? The answer is a resounding no! Your decision to buy one of the evaluated radar detectors may involve researching their non-performance features. Go to their web sites for pricing and features. The question here is how much protection can you afford?

I got the 8500 X50 when I got my stang.....works great because it will pick up on the laser reflections from the cars in front of you or when the cop has his radar already on (ie. when he is driving and in motion). The detector goes off even before you can see the cop. I know it has saved me at least 3 times already.

Checkout laser/radar detector reviews and read the websites. The best ones IMO are the passport 8500 X50 & Valentine One

I love how its considered "protection". Its avoidance, its gettting around the law, its many things, but it sure isnt protection!

I will purchasing mine here soon! LOL

It sure is protection.

It protects my license.
It protects my wallet.
It protects my insurance.

I'm sure I'll think of a few more in time.

My suggestion, get a Phazer AND any cheap radar detector. Yo may also need to get a "splicer" to run both of them. The Phazer guarantee's no tickets or they will pay for it. The Phazer blocks their radar/laser and the detector picks them up. My cousin been running that setup for 3 years and only one ticket, because he was being paced. You may need to check w/ them 'cause their illegal in some states.

I've tried both Valentine 1 and PAssport 8500 X50.

I kept the Passport.

Valentine 1 "falsed" so much that there are places in my 'burg that the thing's arrows and tones stay on constantly for about 2 miles.

Passport (or any other brand) won't protect you from LAser if you're the only guy being targeted, but if you're in a crowd and get hit with Laser, it will make you jump out of your seat and immediately hit the brakes pretty far in advance.

This is a no brainer. Escort passport 8500 x50. Hands down the best OTHER THAN the Valentine 1, but that costs $200 more. The passport 8500 and the valentine one are ALWAYS 1 and 2 in every radar detector test done. I do extensive research before I buy anything, so you can trust my word on this, I bought one myself.

If anybody is interested in buying my Escort Passport 8500 (non X50 version) for $200 plus actual cost of shipping, PM me. I have the original box, case, and manual.

Heard on the radio the other day that here in Mass the Staties now have a new radar that allows them to pick off one car in the middle of a congested group to give a ticket to. This morning I saw a trooper get out of his patrol car with a radar gun in hand just as I passed him (going 68 in my Suburban to save gas). He was in plain sight - no attempt to hide under a bridge abutment or anything and he just started pointing it at everyone going by. I've never seen one there before - and I bet he was playing with this new toy.

Whatever you get - just be sure to be super vigilant and don't rely on the detector to save every day for you!
