Thanks guys... Not really what I wanted to hear, but sometimes the truth hurts...

It was on a major used-car lot. They really don't owe me a thing, I didn't even have a deposit down on it, just an appointment set up. (I tried to send something, they said not to bother.)

They tell me the car was parked, waiting for me, and the girl that takes the pics for the online ads slid into it on a sheet of ice. They "say" slow and gentle, nothing crazy, just an accident.

I guess I'll probably walk away. They're gonna get me a solid number this week so I'll see what that is. And there are several body shops within a mile of the place, so maybe I'll try to get one of them to go look at it for me. They'll be able to tell a lot better in person.

If I can get it "good enough" for 11-12, I'd be happy.

But I guess that's not looking likely.

Thanks again!

Robert

Okay, so in an honest attempt to move on and find another, I looked again at this one:

Ran the carfax, and it's been wrecked TWICE. Once in July 06, and again this past December.

More money, more miles, more wrecks...

Still looking, I guess...

No, this one's only been wrecked now.

The next one I was looking at was wrecked twice.

Wasn't really looking for a vert, or to spend that much, or really, for a car that nice, but I'll keep it in mind...

Really nice car...

I'm waiting to hear what they want for it? Heck if you get it cheap enough strip it out and do something with the drive train. Trans plant it into an old fox body

Last week, the guy said "about eight."

He's supposed to get a solid number this week.

There are a half-dozen body shops within two miles of the lot. I think I'll send as many as I can to go look at the car, and let me know what I'm in for.

If the estimates come back high, use them to try to knock down the price.

We'll see.

I would think if they are going to buy it back from the ins company it will only be a few hundred bucks cost to them.

Not sure what you mean, "buy it back."

I can't believe it'll be enough damage to total it out. The ins will cut a check for the damage, the dealer will keep the car...

a friend totlaed his car. The ins company said it was totaled. They usally cut a check and send your car off to the scrape yard, but you can buy it back if you choose to.
I was thinking the car your looking at was a total loss and it would work out the same way.

Okay, yeah, if it was totalled, but I'm sure it's not that bad...

Makes sense now.

Contrary to popular belief, if the cost to repair damage exceeds 65% of the vehicle's writeoff value they will write it off. The repair cost doesn't have to be the full value.

ie. If the settlement value (book value of the car plus any recent improvements to the car) was $10,000 then if the cost was $6500 to fix it they'll writeoff the car and cut a cheque for $10G minus the deductible.

Darn good guess.

I found the shop that did the insurance estimate: $6390, including both rear wheels.

Guess I'm done, I sure won't pay eight for it...

Thanks guys.

Yeah you're better off walking away from it. Even after it's fixed, it'll never be worth the same amount of cash that it was with a clean title. and if you ever want to resell it, people are going to pull up the Carfax and react the same way you did to the other one you were looking at. It's just going to be a pain in the *** from now on. She's damaged goods

8 no but would you pay 3 or 4k for it? It would have to be less than 3k for me to be interested. At least you could make that back parting it out

The reality is that the sealer will likely auction it off and it'll get fixed and sold off to someone else that doesn't know any better.

I'd pay six.

Even if it did cost me the full 6400 to fix, I'd still have a nice ride for 12,5.

But if they charge the insurance 6400, I could probably find someone to do it good enough for me, for four or five.

A low milage GT for ten grand would be fine with me...

But I think they're gonna stick to wanting eight, anyway.

I would run, not walk, away from this car. Sad but True.

Good luck in your search!
