How To Open Garage Doors

Robbieg wanted to know about my garage door opener mod, so here it is. I did the same thing on my Camaro... note to self, remember to remove garage door opener before trading in vehicle

Anyway, back to this thread:

I bought a switch at Radio Shack $5.05.
My garage door opener has a small 12 volt battery in it .
Toss battery, hard wire to map lights (green for positive, black for negative) use solder, not crappy press fit like Ford does.
Solder switch to switch on opener PCB.
Toss plastic case from garage door opener.
Glue garage door opener board to inside of map light unit with hot glue gun so it doesn't rattle.

Enjoy

+2 on the great idea. I've never seen this done before. Looks like it came from the factory that way.

you have a small 12v battery in your garage door opener? I thought they were powered off a 9v? Will the extra voltage fry the board?

Did the same thing but installed it inside the center armrest. There was room behind the plastic removable cover (the one to adjust the parking brake) to velcro my remote.

I am looking to do something similar except I have a vert, so there isn't as much open space up there. Genie sells a small keychain remote that I was going to hack up. It's much smaller than the regular one, so it shoud fit more easily. I've seen other makes with keychain remotes at Home Depot.

Dr. Q
Mine had a 12 volt battery in it (quite small). That's what got me going on this years ago when I still had my Camaro. Forgot the **** thing when I traded the car in. Had to go back and get it when I got the Mustang home and reached up and the garage door would not open )

Check yours, I'll bet it's 12v.

I put mine in the overhead console also. Instead of wiring directly to the map lights, I went to the inside fuse panel and used a vacant 'switched' terminal. It only operates when the ignition switch is on, which is what I wanted. (Occassionally I have to park outside of the garage.)

Also, my transmitter used a 9V battery. After much struggling with a home made transformer, I finally just tried 12V and it worked just fine.

I also have a vert, that's why I went with the "inside center console" version. Behind that plate there's plenty of room to put the largest remote without removing the casing.

I only added a velcro and the wire inside the box, and I dodn't connected to the car 12v, I left the battery ans 2 years later everything is still OK.

The batteries in these remote are good for a couples of years, so don't spend time and energy connecting it to your car..

I used the Genie Keychain remote, removed the metal key ring and velcro'd it to the center stack, above my right knee. It works fine there, with good range. I like that I can also remove it, like when I go bike riding so I can open/close the garage while I'm out and about.

I did this in my last car ('95 T-bird) and over time the metal clip wore a hole through the cloth of the visor. Not gonna let that happen to my new Stang!

Is there any trick to removing the map light unit?

procopius > the map light just snaps in, give it a firm tug

clark kent > I'm in Canada as well, Victoria and none of the 2 dozen + Mustangs at our 3 dealers have homelink. Must depend on the dealer. Ours options them almost all the same... Pony, Leather, 5 speed or auto

dynamicmustanggt > signal is the same as before the modification

intruder > sorry, don't have the item number. Just go to your local Radio Shack and let the nice guy with the pocket protector and thick glasses know what you are doing and he'll set you up )

Homelink isn't available factory installed in the stang for some unknown reason. The mirror through Ford is about $500 plus install if you opt to have the dealer install one for you. I like many here bought the Mazda piece (same mirror) for about half that and installed it myself.
