Just curious as to what the approximate lifespan is of the factory pads, and at what time you need to start thinking of a brake job.

Totally depends on your driving style/road conditions/traffic...etc. I am at 40K miles now, and I don't expect to have to touch mine until at least 80K, probably 100K just because I drive 60 miles a day on the interstate on cruise control. About 5% of my driving is in the city, and I am easy on the brakes when I do stop.

Our police cars brakes make it about 10K miles, and they are heavy duty brakes at that. All they do is stop and go city style, plus very heavy stops and high speed braking.

My last 3 cars went about 90,000 miles or so. Not much to stop for out here in the sticks.

Okee-dokee.... I was just curious because every now and then I get a squeak, but the service tech at Les Schwab Tire said that it's a lot of the nature of the beast. If it's an all the time squeak, then it could be time for replacing and pad material makes brakes squeak more when cold. I did get my tires rotated today and they didn't say anything about my pads being down, and they always check for that. I did feel my rotors and they appear to be smooth.
