Hood liner - is it really necessary?

Hood liners are made of insulation material which helps keep the engine nice and toasty. Tell me, is that what you want? I have ripped the hood liner off all my cars for the last 30 years.

I haven't heard of painting the underside flat black but this is actually a good idea from a functional standpoint. Black absorbs heat so painting it would aid in reducing underhood temps. FYI, conversely, white reflects heat......

I don't have one with my GT500 hood .... and the body shop painted the bottom of the hood as nice as the top so it has a finshed look ...

None for me - it just holds heat in and muffles the sound.

I picked up some black paint last night and cleaned out an area of the shop where I can paint the hood. Now if only I can find a neighbour to help me remove the hood carefully.

I see you have the Steeda Cowl Hood and the MRT Hood struts. Any problems with the hood bowing or anything like that? I emailed Steeda and they said not to use the hood struts with their hood.

Good thread...mines coming off this weekend. Before lowering the motor, the liner got beat up by a few braided hoses and a plenum cover. I just hope it's painted underneath. Guess I'll find out...

I picked up some bubblewrap today that I will use to protect the hood when I lay the thing down for painting. I figured $12.00 in bubblewrap is a lot cheaper than having to repaint the hood from scratching the heck out of it. My plan is to get this done tonight as long as I can find a neighbour to help me remove the hood.

Not All Vehicles Use Hood Liners. I would Surmise it may even run a Bit Cooler without one! Next time you Drive by a Car Dealership and They Have all The Hoods up Notice the Lack of Liners on Some Models!

Thanks for the info Kevin. I haven't seen too many 05's where they actually did paint the entire panel. Especially on the earlier models like mine.

Also, if you decide to get a New Liner get the 7r3z16738h $84.03 MSRP.It is the BULLITT one and Has a Nice Area Shaped for a Cold Air and the Recess for the Bullitt Strut brace. You will also want to Replace the 13 Clips that hold it up 5r3z54310d12a Msrp $1.49 ea. FYI, I do not Sell this on the Internet cause the Liner comes in a huge box and shipping is expensive. Best to get these local.

Just thinking - WMS has a hoodliner that's specially made to work w/ their intake. Maybe worth looking into?

I read of problems with that one as well, i.e., hanging down and rubbing.

Well I got it painted. Glad the hood is light because I didn't have anyone to help me remove it or reinstall it...ugh! Anyway, I will post more info about what I did in the blog tomorrow. As for now, here is a picture. I had to use a flash since it is already after 10pm. The paint is flat black. The dark areas just show due to the flash.

Wow that looks really good. I'm gonna do that with my black hood, and use flat black. That really looks good with the Sonic Blue.
