I thought I had seen this topic discussed before, but couldn't find it . . .

Took a trip this week with my 2006 GT, and at speeds of 80+, or when driving into a stiff wind, hood flexes and flutters to the point it looks like it will fly off. Anyone else have this problem. Are there any fixes?

I noticed some on mine. I moved the outer bump-stops up just a hair. It seems better, but I haven't hit any high cross winds since. I have gone over 80 though.

Welp...even after adjusting the bumpers under the hood, mine still did it so I just went all the way and put hood pins in. I also had my hood pop on me at the end of a run at the drag strip so that was another reason as well.

I think I'll wait on the hood pins. I'm still under warranty and can take it back if the hood pops.
20 years ago I learned how to drive at high speed with the hood open.

I'll give it a try since never going over 80 isn't an option with this car.

I had the same problem but after moving all the bump stops to the limit it solved the problem. Have to shut the hood 2 or 3 times to get it to close, but no more hood flex.

In my case, if i move the stops up any more, the hood is higher than the fender. But it only really shakes with strong cross winds and i'm going faster then 80 mph. But then again ... i guess i should not be doing 80 mph anyway.

You're caving into the left brain (practical side) thinking. You must begin thinking more right brain (risk taking side) with this car. After all, your right brain is the side that convinced you to buy it.

ya, poor design if you ask me. Has been a problem since day one. Adjusting the bump stops didn't solve the problem on my car. Time to bug Ford to pay for the hood pins

Mine "Flutters" too, but not until 110-120 mph though. Being in Germany and using the autobahn allot, we're above 100 mph about 50% of the time.

I don't even notice it much anymore. I think half the problem is bumper adjust and half is no place for the air to go after it comes through the grill. The flutter is venting the excess air from under the hood.

Glad to know mine isn't the only one that does it. Seems like Ford would have known folks who buy this car might be tempted to test it's limits.

At 110mph, my hood wouldn't be the only thing "fluttering".

Jon,

It's doubtful you would have an extra "fluttering" issue (besides the hood), if you were over here and driving on these roads.

The German autobahns are kept in real good shape and any bumps, dips, or chuck holes are clearly identified with road/warning signs and a speed limit.

When no limits, then it's smooth as glass and before you know it, you're doing 120 mph+ and don't even realize it. Majority of the traffice is cooking along around 80-100 mph anyway.

So . . . when you're doing 55-75 mph down the freeway, it's the same for us at 90-110 mph.

Not to get too far off topic, the History channel did a show on the Autobahn. It was very interesting. Germany has less wrecks on the interstate/autobahn than we do. Then again, you can't get your license until you are 18 and I believe it is much harder over there than it is over here.

Yes, that's true.

I've been in Germany (off & on) for 20 years - 3 different Tours.

The one thing I noticed is:

If you're not trying to watch your speed, you're paying more attention to the road and what's coming up.

Also the German drivers are more "disciplined" about staying in the right lane to cruise. They only go in the left lane to pass and then immediately return to the right.

Also, 75% of the autobahn is "No Passing for Trucks", so they are rarely a factor.

Can't say the same is true here in central Arkansas. Trucks are a huge factor!

Seen that documentary; it was indeed very good.

I just figure, after a life time on US roadways, that 110 on the autobahn (or anywhere) would have me grabbing folds of upholstery with my butt. . .

I'm not promoting breaking the law or anything but I've had my 05 Mustang GT up to 110 a couple of times, unintentionally of course, going with the flow of traffic and occasionally passing on the I-15 25 miles north of S.D. where it was pretty open. This was after I adjusted my hood bumpers BTW.

No drama, it felt like 70. It just sneaks up on you. Which is why I use my cruise control now.

Happened to me this morning, driving into a little rain, but a very strong headwind...at about 85MPH the hood began to flutter...took me completely by surprise...I didn't like this at all. I'll play with the hood bumper stops a little...but Ford should have hinged the hood at the front and not the rear.
