High Beam Issue

I have a 2009 Mustang GT with HID headlights.I have no high beams on either side.

The high beam indicator in the car works OK. I checked the high beam relay and high beam fuse. Al checked out OK.

I can hear clicking when I switch the lever in the car.

The car only has 20K mi, so I doubt bad bulbs or HID system.

Any ideas?

Unless the car has very high mileage? I would agree with your statement. Being that the OP's car is a 10 year old 2009 model, I would say that it's more than likely due from the age of the car that's causing problems with the electrical system. Therefore, I would start there by having the electrical system/switches checked out. Anyhow, just saying.

You mentioned that you hear clicking when switching on/off the high beam lever? Well just keep in mind that despite your car only having 20K miles, it's still never the less a 10 year old 2009 model in which components that are part of the electrical system, such as the bulbs, switches, relays and modules do start to deteriorate and wear out from age. Therefore, I would recommend having your HID and electrical system checked out. Anyhow, just my opinion.

usually the obvious answer is the high-beam bulbs have burned out . . . but I guess that does not apply to HID's . . . does anyone know how the HID high beams actually work; is there a shutter of some kind that covers the top when on low beam, or is the lens aimed up and down?

knowing how it works might help figure out what is going on, LOL

You are correct. There is a shutter that covers the top of the bulb when it opens and closes when you turn on and off the high beams. There are two wires you can test this out with a 9v batt. You can actually hear the shutter click open and closed. I would test the shutter first to see if that is your issue.

....you can check if the two wires ( red/white -low beam and yellow white high beam ) are hot at the connector that sits at the head lamp assy. if yes - your problem might be the ballast assy or the HID bulb
. BUT BE CAREFUL. the ballast assy is a HIGH VOLTAGE PART . So the high tension can be very dangerous !!!

I changed my HID for the "normal" H13 System. Was a simple swap. and the light is still o.k for me

Greetings Juergen

It turned out to be a pair of relays that engage the shutters. Both failed. Swapped them and working fine.

thanks all
