My Mustang was a Michigan car before I got it. So it never had any holes drilled in the front bumper because MI doesn't require them. But I was living in Toledo OH, where they do require a front plate. But I never installed it because I didn't have any mounting hardware. PLus we were right on the border, so Im sure OH cops in that area were used to not seeing front plates, so they never checked.

Now I'm in Illinois where they still require them. But I'm about 1 hour from the Indiana border, where they don't require them. So I'm still trying to get away with it. Which I have so far. But I keep the extra plate in my trunk just in case they ask. Then I can just tell them that I didnt have any way to mount it at the time, and forgot all about it.

I would stick it in the window, but I hate anything extra above the dash. Its too distracting for me.

So one year without a front plate, and I'm still good. I think it helps living close to a state where they don't require one. Back home where I grew up at, it was so rural, and surrounded by 2 other states that require them, they would ticket you if you didn't have one. Growing up, I always liked them, because you could see who you were meeting.

The cops around here can be real annoying about plates and other stuff.
My plate is mounted to a plastic plate holder.
I have some heavy-duty velcro straps holding it to the black plastic as low as it will go.
I can undo the velcro in seconds for a show if I want.
The cheap plate holder is the first thing to scrape the ground as a side benefit.

Mine's not a DD, my state requires a front plate, and I refuse. Period. I'll pay the fine ten times before I drill the bumper.

Wisconsin Legislation - Statute Chapter 341.15

(2)
Registration plates shall be attached firmly and rigidly in
a horizontal position and conspicuous place. The plates shall at
all times be maintained in a legible condition and shall be so displayed
that they can be readily and distinctly seen and read. Any
peace officer may require the operator of any vehicle on which
plates are not properly displayed to display such plates as required
by this section.

I live right across the street from the Police department. I drove over there with this custom mounted plate on a stainless steel bracket and asked if it was ok. I took a copy of the State Statute with me and they read it, looked at my car, and said "why not"?

Visible (check)
Horizontal (check)
Rigid (check)
Conspicuous (check)

Life's good!

heres how I had mine mounted. I will probably mount there again and see what happens. They usally don't pull you over for just the plate around here. You need to be speeding or breaking some other law first.

Shaun and Glenn, don't come to Texas, that is patently not legal.

The law was recently changed to say if the cops can't tell what state it's from (reading the words, mind, not the design) or the design itself (Texas has a little diorama on the bottom of most) then it's gonna get ya a fine.

Most other states have this in effect as well.

Mine came with holes, so I use them. The C5 Corvette had the best solution: A bumper *designed* to correctly hold the license plates up front. Why is it this mandatory in many states across the United States (and others, I'm sure) issue is NOT DESIGNED IN?!

One of the *dumbest* design issues in the car business, honestly.

And I'm in the camp of "I'd pay before drilling"... except that with that plate over there
<--
I'd get a lot more attention.

In my state, it is actually legal to cover the part that says "LIVE FREE OR DIE".

I took the plate off when I put the stripes on and liked it so much I kept it that way. I was really paranoid about getting pulled over though and kept the front plate on the passenger dash. Drove it a few times locally passing by several police and sheriff deputies with no problems. But when I decided to take it for a roadtrip about an hour away I wasn't 10 minutes from home when I passed the first Texas State Trooper and sure enough he ran me down and pulled me over. I asked if it was OK to be in windsheild and he said no, get it remounted and gave me a warning. So moral of the story is "Don't Mess with Texas (State Troopers)"!

Seems like I see people with plates in their front window every one in awhile. This isn't legal.

It's probably not legal here, but this guy probably just wanted to pull me over. He asked me what I had done to th car and I started worrying if he was gonna get on me about the exhaust. Then he was all col about it and asked me when I was going to get a supercharger for it.

My brother-in-law is a trooper in the area and he said he never bothers with it unless he just wants to pull someone over.

So other than being careful because of the clearance, no problems monting that on the CS front end Gary?? I like the idea of losing the front plate from center ALOT!!

Al, I thought I was carzy for trying it, but it works for me. I just stay clear of parking stops and anything in the road.

Here is a photo with it 'hidden'. The cool thing is that it has just about the same clearance closed as it does open. The plate slides and then flips up. It has a slight bakward lean to it so when the wind hits it it just won't accidentally tilt forward and close.

I don't have any static pics of it in the open position.

Thanks man. In my case the stripes are covering the stupid holes the dealer put there.

I don't know about you but on my CS with the FRPP springs I tend to scrape more on the left and right front where the painted surface meets the black plastic middle. The underside of those two tips take the brunt of the scrapes it seems.

My car had the holes in the bumped, the vinyl stripes went over it. i have no intention to put it back on. i mounted both plates on the back, one on top of the other, just so i know where it is. i've never had any problems with it and my university police are always all over my car, trying to pull me over for whatever they can and trying to nail me with parking tickets (so far i haven't had to pay any fines). although front plates are required in CT, they don't seem to crack down on it. I'm not sure why everyone is so concerned about drilling the bumper, it's plastic, no rust, i'm just more opposed to the awkward plate in the middle of my front end. looks really clean without it, torch red, white stripes, no unsightly CT license plate.

I hear ya bud, I love the stance the FRPP springs give the car but it's not pretty underneath!!

With my '94 and '01 Vette I ran without the front plate and I was stopped two times in 14 years...however, the last time I got stopped I finally broke down and bought a color matching frame which fits in the front bumper of the Vette and hides a considerable amount of the plate.
The reason a lot of states love the front plate is because they can easily identify cars running through the red light camera intersections. It may also be that radar/laser bounce more readily off the metal plate than plastic bumpers.
I agree...I think it looks ugly and that all states should only have a rear plate.
