My friend Jason who has an identical '05GT to mine came over today and
during our conversation told me that his girl friend was following him
one day at 70+ MPH and noticed the rear bumper seemed to be very
loose and moving in and out very quickly and that she thought the
license plate was about to come loose.

After stopping, he checked the bumper, pulling it from the bottom under
the license plate and it was very "loose". After checking it out he was told
it was common only to GT bumpers. He took it to his dealer and they knew
about it and put some sort of bracing on it and now it is very solid.

I tested my bumper and it is also very sloppy. Has anybody else heard
of this and if so what was done to correct it?

It is definatelt flimsy. I had someone stop me on the road to tell me my license pate was coming off. It was just wobbling. Everything seems secure though?

I definately want to know what the dealer did to fix the issue. I noticed the bumper problem a while ago and now that I have the Street Scene rear valance installed I think it is a lot worse.

I never have had anyone say this to me, but this is very interesting nonetheless.

How the heck can this be right? A flimsy bumper....hmmm

While under my car (2006 GT) installing some SLP Power-Flos I noticed there was a piece of the bumper that was missing a connection to the frame. There was a tab with a hole (and an associated hole in the frame) but it was not connected.

Mine is flimsy too. Especially the front after installing the CDC splitter.

Noticed this on mine too. Very flimsy. Let us know what you find out on the dealer fix.

I just checked mine. There are three brackets tieing the bottom of the plastic bumper to the frame. The problem is, these brackets are plastic and aren't strong enough to keep the bumper from moving in and out. Poor design. :nono:

My flimsy bumper was the cause of the mysterious rattle I kept hearing from behind in certain conditions. At first I thought the exhaust was touching somewhere on the chassis, but when I first waxed my car I noticed the bumper, shook it a bit and there it was: The Rattle!
Like Dusty said... poor design of the plastic brackets

With the bumper being fimsy could a fender bender cause more damage than avgeage.. Could the bumper break loose and the car smash the body??

You need to distinguish between the bumper cover (which is what I believe everyone is referring to) and the actual bumper (which is underneath the bumber cover). The bumper cover is thin plastic and is designed to flex quite a bit in order to absorb an impact and bounce back. The bumper is attached to the unibody and is designed according to federal guidelines for impacts. I had a rear impact on my Mazda6 that distorted the bumper cover but didn't do any damage whatsoever to the actual metal parts of the body due to the bumper absorbing the impact.

Do we know if the 2006 GT's are experiencing the same issue?

I've got a 2006 and it's pretty flimsy too.
